Reddit’s New Logo as it brings back the 2017 r/Place on April Fools Day

Global brands utilize April Fools Day for marketing opportunities, and many try to come up with creative and fun ways to celebrate it. Reddit is not new to this. If you’re a Reddit user, you must be wondering why your logo appears pixelated. Well, r/Place is back!

First of all, Reddit wishes you a Happy April Fools Day! But wait, it’s no prank. Reddit did change its usual solid design to a pixelated version. Let’s get to know all about this new logo.

What’s up with r/Place?

Don’t worry, you haven’t missed the new logo. The new pixelated version of Reddit’s log will appear till April 5th, midnight ET. So what’s up with the latest version? The new logo has a pixelated look, but it’s temporary just in case you’re missing the old solid design.

Reddit is celebrating April Fools Day with its millions of users. The international community website brought back its 2017 r/Place once again. Wondering what is r/Place? it’s not that technical.

Explaining r/Place

To put it in simpler terms, it was a collaborative project and social experiment hosted by Reddit on April 1, 2017. It involves an online canvas located on a subreddit called r/place which users could edit by changing the colour of a single-pixel from a 16-colour pallet.

Once each pixel was placed, a timer prevented the user from placing any pixels for a period varying from 5 to 20 minutes. Today, I am feeling nostalgic because Reddit has done it again.

FYI, in 2017, over 1 million users edited the canvas, placing over 16 million tiles, and after 72 hours, over 90,000 users were actively viewing or editing the canvas. This project was applauded as it reflected Reddit’s online communities and internet culture as a whole. Let’s see how many users play with this new logo this year? We’ll only know it by April, 5th.

Reddit’s valuation

Reddit was founded by three roommates from University of Virginia, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian and Aaron Swartz in 2005.  The site was acquired by Condé Nast Publications in 2006.

Reddit raised $50 million in a funding round led by Sam Altman and investors like March Andreessen, Ron Conway, Snoop Dogg and Jared Leto. The company was valued at $500 million then. The company witnessed millions of funding in 2017 and 2019. In 2021, a $700 million funding round led by Fidelity Investments raised the valuation to over $10 billion.

Reddit did a great job to mark April Fools Day today. The pixelated logo took many down the memory lane. However, the Snoo Head alien remains classic. The stylised smiling alien is Reddi’s mascot.

Other brands are also celebrating the day by sending users easter eggs. Aren’t you enjoying Reddit’s way of wishing you April Fools? What do you think about its r/Place project?
