Ronaldo snubs Karim Benzema as his choice for Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo chose to vote for Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho, and N’golo Kante for The Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2021 over his former teammate and confidant Karim Benzema, despite having a great year at Real Madrid.

Crack in Friendship or showing professionalism?

It was quite astonishing to notice that Karim Benzema was kept out of the top 3 by CR7, in spite of having over 39 goals and assists for club and country in only 46 appearances. Benzema has been in blistering form and a crucial part of the Real Madrid squad. He is currently their ace forward, and along with Vinicius, he is arguably one of the best players in the world.

This has left some of the fans wondering and upset as to why he would not vote for his previous teammate. Cristiano, himself took home The Best FIFA Special Award for Men’s Football.

Some of the fans claimed Ronaldo was trying to be unbiased and voted for whom he felt were truly deserving for the title. Compared to Benzema, his other votes Jorginho and Kante, both being the European Champions, have solidified Chelsea’s midfield. Some stated, that Ronaldo was only showing ‘professionalism’ by not picking his friend.

We saw even the likes of Lionel Messi vote for Karim, who also voted for his current teammates Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and also the Bayern maestro Robert Lewandowski, who won the award.

Robert Lewandowski, with 82 votes, was the undisputed winner while Messi stood second with 39 votes to his name. Missing out on the Ballon d’Or this year, Lewandowski was rewarded for his whopping 57 goals and assists in only 40 appearances for club and country.

Benzema Left Out Of The FIFA XI

Another controversy that sparked over Karim Benzema, was him being left out of FIFA’s Team of The Year. The 34-year-old French striker’s manager Karim Djaziri did not hold back to criticize FIFA.

Karim Benzema has been in phenomenal form.

‘Not putting Benzema in the XI of the year is a lack of respect for football, But we know that football is the least of FIFA’s concerns, and it has been for a long time!’, said Djaziri via his Twitter account.

The Team of The Year this year, includes four forwards, namely Haaland, Messi, Lewandowski, and Ronaldo. But Benzema was not the only big-name player left out. Mo Salah was also exempted from the list, in spite of having 16 goals for Liverpool.

Fans were quick to point out the absence of the keeper Edouard Mendy as well, who won the Best Men’s Goalkeeper award.
