At the moment, Pope Francis is struggling with his health! As per various reports, the 86-year-old Pope is currently in a hospital as he is suffering from a respiratory infection. It seems like he will stay in the hospital for a couple of days for treatment.

What happened to Pope Francis?

In a statement issued via Telegram, to the Vatican’s accredited media, Matteo Bruni provided a health update about Pope Francis. The statement read, “Pope Francis has a respiratory infection that requires a few days of appropriate medical therapy in the hospital.”

It has been reported that Pope Francis was taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital after he complained about respiratory difficulties over the past couple of days. Soon after, a few tests were carried out which showed a respiratory problem, excluding Covid-19 infection.

A statement put out by the Vatican read, “In recent days Pope Francis has complained of some respiratory difficulties and in the afternoon went to the Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome to undergo some medical check-ups.”

It further read, “The results show a respiratory infection (Covid-19 infection excluded) that will require a few days of appropriate hospital medical treatment.”

Pope Francis had a regular check-up on Wednesday

As per the Vatican, Pope Francis was taken to a hospital for a regular medical check up on Wednesday, March 29. Then, after the checkup, he returned to Santa Marta and conducted a usual Wednesday public audience. Soon after, he began experiencing some chest pains and then, he was rushed to the hospital.

Pope’s personal health care assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, who is always with him called the ambulance and took him to Gemelli hospital. After reaching the Coronary unit of the Gemelli hospital, Pope underwent many checkups.

All you need to know about respiratory tract infection

For those of you who are unaware, let us share with you, RTI which stands for respiratory tract infection is an infection of the lower or upper respiratory tract. When we talk about upper respiratory tract infections, they consist of acute otitis media, acute rhinosinusitis, acute rhinitis, common cold, and laryngitis.

On the other hand, lower respiratory tract infections include bronchiolitis, acute bronchitis, tracheitis, and pneumonia. Some symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections are as follows:

  • Sore throat
  • cough
  • runny nose
  • fatigue and weakness
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • hoarse voice
  • fever
  • red eyes
