More than 8 million Aussies cast their ballots at approximately 7,000 polling booths across the length and breadth of the nation as per the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). The voting began at 8 AM on Saturday morning and concluded at 6 PM.

The liberal-National coalition led by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has conceded defeat.

“Tonight, I have spoken to the Leader of the Opposition and the incoming Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. And I’ve congratulated him on his election victory this evening.

To my colleagues tonight, who have had to deal with very difficult news, and have lost their seats tonight, I as leader take responsibility for the wins and the losses. That is the burden and that is the responsibility of leadership,” Morrison said.

Morrison also said that he would be handing over the leadership to Anthony Albanese at the next party room meeting.

Who is Anthony Albanese?

Anthony Albanese, who had a humble start to life as a politician served as Leader of the Opposition and leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 2019 to 2022. He served as a member of parliament representing the division of Grayndler, a state in NSW since 1996.

In 2013, he also served as the deputy prime minister of Australia under the leadership of the second Rudd Government and as a cabinet minister for six years from 2007 and 2013.

Albanese was born in the year 1963 in Sydney. He studied at St Mary’s Cathedral College and later enrolled at the University of Sydney to pursue a degree in economics.

When he was a student, he joined the Labor Party and worked as a party official and research officer.

Albanese was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1996 election. Five years later, he was first appointed to the Shadow Cabinet. He served several roles and eventually became Manager of Opposition Business in 2006.¬†Albanese was appointed as Leader of the House after Labor’s part registered victory in the 2007 election.
