Vladimir Putin Defends JK Rowling as He Talks About ‘Cancel Culture’

Vladimir’s latest controversy includes J K Rowling and cancel culture. In a recent speech, Vladimir Putin claimed that the west was attempting to cancel the Russian culture, which included the works of great composers like Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Dmitry Shostakovich, and Sergei Rachmaninov.

What Did Putin Say?

In his speech, Putin went on to reference the famous author of the Harry Potter series, J K Rowling, as an example of someone who was the victim of ‘cancel culture’. He said that ‘They canceled Joanne Rowling recently—the children’s author, her books are published all over the world—just because she didn’t satisfy the demands of gender rights.’  This was said in a televised speech that was telecast on Friday.

But Putin did not stop there. He even compared the trend of cancel culture to Nazis burning books back in the 1930s. He said that such a thing was not possible in Russia as their culture was insured against it.

He further added that ‘And it’s inseparable for us from our motherland, from Russia, where there is no place for ethnic intolerance, where for centuries representatives from dozens of ethnic groups have been living together.’

J K Rowling’s Controversy

Rowling has been in several controversies over the years, some of them accusing her of being transphobic after her comments on the transgender community. She was criticized back in 2020 for a series of tweets about controversial ideas of what a woman should be like. This happened after Scotland declared that it would be logging women as rapists too.

But that was not all. In 2022, she again landed in hot water when she tweeted a response to a question ‘Who is a woman?’ with ‘We Who Shall Not Be Named.’

What Is Cancel Culture?

Over the past few years, the concept of cancel culture has become very popular and it has also been a topic of discussion. It seems like every other day now, a celebrity is canceled due to something petty they did years ago.

People on the internet take it upon themselves to end the career of the said person. They not only hurl abuses at them on social media but go out of their way to boycott their products or contact their sponsors to harm them.

There is a growing debate around who these people are and why they feel entitled enough to decide whether someone’s career should be canceled or not.

As harmful as the cancel culture may seem, they are not quite effective when it comes to celebrities. For example, J K Rowling has been canceled several times so far, but it does not hamper her popularity nor does it affect her income.

While there may be negative aspects of cancel culture, the online backlash has had an effect on people who were not as popular or powerful as Rowling. Shane Gillis lost his job at the popular show Saturday Night Live after incidences of racism and homophobic jokes came out about his past.

Cancel culture may be appreciated by some and criticized by others. But Vladimir Putin giving J K Rowling as an example of cancel culture sure is interesting. Rowling has not yet commented on Putin’s remarks.
