Renowned gospel singer Sammie Okposo has passed away at the age of 51. The Nigerian singer died in the early hours of Friday, November 25, his staff has confirmed. An official cause of death has not been revealed yet; however, as per reports in Nigerian media, the singer slumped after suffering a heart attack.

Sammie Okposo Passes Away at 51
Okposo’s manager confirmed that the singer died on Friday around 4:00 am at his home in Lagos. His family has also released a statement, saying that they ‘believe that he is with Jesus singing with angels.’
Okposo had earlier narrowly escaped death two years ago. In 2020, he was driving on a bridge when the propeller shaft of his car suddenly pulled off. The singer came out of the accident unharmed and shared a photo of the car on social media.
He wrote at the time, “Just imagine what would have happened if the voice of God did not prompt me to slow down imagine what would have happened if I was still on 120kph when the propeller shaft of my car pulled off.”
“Oh Jesus oh Jesus oh Jesus thank you, my savior, my deliverer my protector my shield I’m alive because of you Jesus I am fine no scratch nothing missing nothing broken yet again the devil and his cohorts have failed and they will continue to fail,” he had added.
Tributes Pour in from Music Industry
Okposo’s friends from the music industry mourned his death and paid their tributes. Nathaniel Bassey wrote, “News of Our Brother’s passing, Minister Sammy Okposo, hit me really hard this morning. Still dazed. Pray God’s comfort and strength for the immediate family, friends and colleagues.”
Frank Edoho tweeted, “My friend Sammy Okposo has left us with a painful hollow in our hearts. I am saddened because he literally praised and worshiped God all the time. God probably needed that sonorous voice in heaven. Da, Sammy! I will miss you, immensely! Rest in Peace.”
A fan also remembered the singer and wrote, “I remember the day i watched Sammie Okposo Perform live, He brought the Heavens down with him that night. Everyone was indeed blessed. I felt blessed, i will never forget that experience. Rest in Peace Sammie Okposo Northern Christians • NYSC • Obi-Datti.”
Sammie Okposo Released his First Album in 2000
Born on May 30, 1971 in Delta State, Sammie Okposo went on to make a name for himself in the gospel music scene. In 2000, he launched his first album, titled Unconditional Love. The collection featured Welu Welu, one of the singer’s most popular tracks.
The singer then followed up with his second album, Addicted, in 2004. Over the years, he performed around the world with a number of artists, including Kevin Bond and Marvelous Odiete. He was also the head of Zamar, an entertainment company.
The singer won multiple awards in his career, including the African Gospel Music and Media Award, the Kora Award in South Africa, the Atlanta Georgia USA-Trail Blaizer Award, and the NMVA Nigerian Music Video Award.
