President of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Dies at 73

The President of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, passed away at the age of 73 years after battling an illness for many years. The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced the news of 40 days of mourning with flags being at half mast from this Friday.

What Did The Ministry Of Presidential Affairs Say?

The Sheikh was ruling UAE since 2004 and was a crucial factor in the monumental rise of UAE on the international scene.

After his demise, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs released a statement. The statement was tweeted, which read “The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has mourned to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic nations and the world the death of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan”.

Along with the statement, the ministry announced that there would be 40 days of mourning in the UAE. Where the flags would be half-mast from Friday. Work is to be suspended for three days for the public and the private sector.

More About President Sheikh Khalifa

Sheikh took over as the second President of UAE in 2004. He succeeded his father and became the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, which is the richest of the federations seven emirates. Around 2014, he suffered from a stroke and had to undergo a surgery.

After that, he did not make many public appearances although he continued to issue rulings. When he did make an appearance in public, it was evident that he had become frail.

His half-brother, Muhammad bin Zayed, shared his condolences on Twitter. He said “We belong to God and to Him we shall return. He also added that “The Emirates lost its righteous son, the leader of the ’empowerment stage’ and the trustee of its blessed journey”.

Who Will Be The Next President?

Muhammad was seen as the de-facto ruler and often the decision maker of most of the major foreign policies. Even decisions like joining Saudi in its war against Yemen and spearheading an embargo on its neighbor Qatar were made by Muhammad.

There have been no announcements of who would be the next President. But popular opinion is that Muhammad bin Zayed may be named the next President of the UAE.

Condolences From Other Countries

Condolences have started rolling in from other countries. The Prime Minister of India offered his condolences and said “He was a great statesman & visionary leader under whom India-UAE relations prospered. Heartfelt condolences of people of India are with people of UAE,”.

Israeli leaders also expressed their sadness over the demise of the President.  Prime Minister Naftali Bennett released a statement saying” Sheikh Khalifa’s legacy and tremendous deeds are greatly admired in Israel,”.

President Isaac Herzog stated “a great loss for our friends in the UAE and for the whole region”.

The world’s tallest building in Dubai took the ex-President’s name (Burj Khalifa) after he bailed Dubai out of debt. The Sheikh was also an avid fan of football, he supported the acquisition Of Manchester City. The reason of the Sheikh’s death has not been revealed to the public as of now.
