Is Plan B an Abortion Pill and Is it Illegal to Buy Now?

On Friday, June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 court case in a 5-4 decision ending the constitutional right to abortion in the US.

In all likelihood, abortion will now be banned in many US states making people wonder if access to birth control, IUDs, and other emergency contraception will also be affected after the decision.

Last year a study revealed that 24 percent of women in the age group of 22 to 49 years old had taken emergency contraception in their lifetime.

Dr. Jessica Shepherd, an ob-gyn and director of Minimally Invasive Gynecology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said, “Emergency contraception should not be used as a regular method of birth control. Implantation at the beginning of pregnancy happens about a week after fertilization”.

We will try to answer your queries pertaining to the morning-after emergency contraception pill Plan B in our article below.

What is Plan B and is it Legal?

The birth control “Plan B” pill otherwise known as the morning-after pill is oral emergency contraception that can be consumed up to five days after unprotected sex in order to reduce the risk of pregnancy.┬áThis includes if your method of birth control failed for example a ripped condom or missing a birth control pill.

There are rumors on social media that Plan B, the emergency contraception pill is next on the chopping block.

Going by the Supreme Court’s decision, the constitutional right of taking contraceptives remains untouched for now, which means Plan B is legal.

There are two varieties of morning-after pills viz. levonorgestrel pills and the ulipristal acetate-based Ella pill. Plan B One-Step also popular as just Plan B, is arguably the most well-known levonorgestrel pill in the country.

According to Planned Parenthood, taking a levonorgestrel morning-after pill within three days of unprotected sex can lower your chance of getting pregnant by 75-89%. In addition to Plan B One-Step, common brands include Take Action, Preventeza, AfterPill, Aftera, My Choice, My Way, Option 2, and EContra One-Step.

When should I take Plan B?

According to obstetrician-gynecologist, MD Dr. Jessica Lincoln, “Plan B should be taken by 3 days or 72 hours of unprotected sex. But it works better the sooner you take it.”

Plan B and other pills are available easily in the nearby local drug stores or online without a prescription.

Shelf Life of Plan B

Plan B comes with a shelf life of about four years provided it is stored properly as instructed by the manufacturer. In spite of that, it is highly recommended to check the box for the expiration date before buying.

Is there any need to stockpile Plan B?

Now that Roe v. Wade case has been overturned by the court, many women are thinking about whether they should go ahead and purchase Plan B in bulk quantity just in case they need it in the near future.

Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, MD, obstetrician-gynecologist cautions, “It’s unnecessary to stock up in bulk like people did with toilet paper back in 2020. This will lead to a lack of access when people need it most. Instead, get yourself one or two so you have them if you or a friend needs them. But don’t go overboard.”

The right to Contraceptives

Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut established that married couples have a right to buy and use contraception in 1965. A few years later in 1972, the court extended the rights to unmarried individuals in Eisenstadt v. Baird case.

The court ruled that the right to privacy is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Well, the new ruling from the Supreme Court will certainly have a mixed opinion from people. What is your take on the same? Do share your thoughts in our comments section below!
