There’s nothing like a Bhangra dance-off to bring Canadians from both sides of the political spectrum together.

Jasmeet Singh and Navdeep Bains are two of the most recognizable Sikh political figures in Canada today.  Singh — who was hailed by the New York Times last year as “Canada’s newest political star” — is seen as current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s primary rival by many. As the leader of the New Democratic Party, the 39-year-old son of Indian immigrants has become known for speaking out about increased income inequality in Canada and issues like rising education costs. Meanwhile, through his work as Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Bains was dubbed the ‘Minister of Everything’ by one newspaper and is considered one of the most accessible members of Trudeau’s administration.

The two politicians met for a friendly dance competition last week as part of a fundraising gala for Seva Food Bank, a nonprofit that in its words “provides safe, nutritious and culturally-appropriate food to low-income families” in Mississauga, Ontario. In order for the dance off to take place, the food bank asked gala attendees to raise at least $40,000 at the event. According to the site In Brampton, Seva Food Bank more than met that goal and reportedly raised $50,000 over the course of the evening.

Perhaps it is fitting that Singh and Bains’s dance styles matched their personalities. As you can see below, Singh decided to go barefoot as he hit the floor.

As for Bains, the normally more reserved cabinet minister threw himself into the task.
