The most popular online streaming platform, Netflix is planning to spread its legs into the video gaming market. The OTT giant has hired the former EA and Facebook executive, Mike Verdu for the post of vice president of game development. As of now, Netflix is famous for providing movies and TV shows on this platform and has been giving hints regarding spreading its legs into the gaming industry for a while now.
Netflix Planning To Compete In Gaming Industry
According to a report published by Bloomberg, Netflix is planning to expand its business by coming into the video gaming market next year. The company is all set to take on the likes of top names of gaming markets like Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, and more. All the games will be displayed right alongside the TV shows and movies, which are already present to Netflix users. Most importantly, Netflix is not going to charge its customer with any extra money for this giving content.
A person familiar with the situation said, “The idea is to offer video games on Netflix’s streaming platform within the next year. The games will appear alongside current fare as a new programming genre – similar to what Netflix did with documentaries and stand-up specials”.
With Mike Verdu as vice president of gaming development, Netflix will continue to develop its gaming division in the upcoming months. The online streaming platform, Netflix has also shared news regarding the availability of some new roles for the game development positions on its website.
Netflix And Its History With Gaming Market
Netflix has been giving hints regarding entering into the game video gaming market for a while now. A long time back, the company launched the free-to-play Stranger Things mobile game at the announcement of E3 in 2019. In May 2021 Netflix shared the news that they are looking for an executive that will help them to boost their investment in the video gaming market. The OTT giant has earlier also tried to introduce something new to its platform in the form of interactive movies and TV shows such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Carmen Sandiego.
Netflix Is Now More Child Friendly
Recently, Netflix has announced to introduce two new services that will make its platform more child-friendly. The first feature has been given the name, “Kids Recap Email Feature“. By enabling this feature, parents can have a watch on their children’s favorite programs on Netflix, their content preference, and recommendations. This feature will start rolling out to all the Netflix users who have an active kids profile on their account from July 16.
The other feature added by Netflix is called, “Kids Top 10“. This feature will suggest the top 10 most popular TV shows and movies for children. This list will be updated on a daily basis with their maturity rating. Netflix users can get access to this list by visiting the Kids profile home page or the “New and Popular” section available in the menu bar. This feature has already been launched in more than 93 countries.
