Elon Musk Says He Would Unban Donald Trump from Twitter

The world’s richest person and would-be owner of social media microblogging giant Twitter Inc, Elon Musk disclosed on 11th May, Tuesday that he would revoke Twitter’s permanent ban of former US President Donald Trump post completion of his $44 billion acquisition.

The deal is subject to shareholder approval and it is expected that it will take anywhere between 3-4 months to close the deal. Elon Musk is confident of closing it early before the October deadline.

Elon Musk was speaking at a conference in London on Tuesday virtually. He said that the company’s decision to ban the former US president ‘was a morally bad decision and foolish in the extreme’.

Musk says he would reverse the Twitter ban on Trump

This is the first time Musk has discussed specifically Trump’s permanent ban from using the platform after he declared his intention to take over the company last month.

Musk said,” I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump. It alienated a large part of the country, and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice. He is now going to be on Truth Social”.

Last year in January, Trump was banned from Twitter after the chaos and anarchy created by his supporters inside the US Capitol and trying to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

Trump made it very clear about this issue earlier that he would not return to Twitter even if the company invites him or reinstates his account.

He has launched his own competing service platform titled Truth Social this year. Truth Social app was first launched on the Apple app store in February 2022 and the app is facing some sort of technical glitches every now and then whenever it starts letting more people access it.

Musk says permanent bans should be extremely rare

Elon Musk while speaking at the FT Future of the Car conference reiterated that Twitter’s ban on Trump was a mistake. Musk further elaborated that he had a healthy discussion about the issue of permanent bans, or ‘permabans’ with Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter.

“He and I are of the same mind, which is that permanent bans should be extremely rare, and really reserved for accounts that are bots, or spam/scam accounts, I would reverse the permaban [of Trump]. Obviously, I don’t own Twitter yet, so this is not something that will definitely happen.” said Musk.

Musk added, “But my opinion, and I want to be clear that Jack Dorsey shares this opinion, is that we should not have permabans”.

Musk also highlighted that most of Twitter’s employees are more influenced and inclined toward left ideology as the company is headquartered in San Francisco. San Francisco is considered to be one of the most liberal American cities and is famous for electing Democrat and progressive candidates.

Ever since Musk made it official about his intention to take over the company to make it a free speech platform, there has been a lot of speculation from fellow Twitteratis and fans of Donald Trump about whether he would revoke the ban imposed on Trump and reinstate his account.

There was no official comment from either Donald Trump or his spokesperson at the time of writing this article.
