On 22nd December, BTS has already achieved the feat of becoming the first foreign group in history to top Oricon’s year-end album chart for 2021 with their Japanese compilation album “BTS, THE BEST”.
The album which was released in June this year has successfully sold 993,000 copies in Japan which made it the best-selling album in the country this year.
At the end of every year, Oricon publishes its annual rankings of the best-selling albums as well as singles by compiling sales data. For releasing this year’s rankings, the company has taken into account the sales data within Japan starting from 28th December 2020 to 20th December 2021.
As per Oricon, the group took the top spot of this year’s artist rankings owing to the huge success of “BTS, THE BEST”, the blockbuster single “Butter,” and also because of the popularity gained by the group after the success of their 2020 hit “Dynamite”. All contributed much to BTS topping the artist rankings for 2021.
On this achievement, the BTS members thanked their fans by commenting, “We are truly delighted and grateful to claim No. 1 on Oricon’s yearly rankings for 2021. We believe this is all thanks to ARMY [BTS’s fandom], who are always supporting us. Thank you so much for always giving us your unchanging love and support.”
As such, BTS has now become the first foreign group to top Oricon’s year-end album chart as well as the first foreign artist to record this feat in the past 37 years. 37 years ago, Michael Jackson achieved this feat by topping the 1984 chart with “Thriller.”
Well, “BTS, THE BEST” also holds another Oricon record as it previously recorded the highest first-week sales by a foreign male artist earlier in 2021.
Oricon, while revealing the BTS achievement had stated, “‘BTS, THE BEST’ also sold 782,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 1 on the weekly album chart (for the week of June 28), setting a new record for the highest first-week sales of any foreign male artist.”
We congratulate BTS on recording another big achievement which is known for recording new feats every now and then!
