Ashton Kutcher Reveals He Was Diagnosed With Autoimmune Disorder

Ashton Kutcher has opened up about his struggle with severe health issues in the past two years. The actor has revealed that an autoimmune disorder left him without the ability to see, hear or walk.

Ashton was seen making the revelation in a sneak peek of his upcoming appearance in Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge. Read on to the complete details of the development.

Ashton’s Battle with Autoimmune Disorder

Talking about the disease, Ashton said, “Like two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis, that, like, knocked out my vision, it knocked out my hearing, it knocked out, like, all my equilibrium.”

“You don’t really appreciate it until it’s gone. Until you go, ‘I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to see again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to hear again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to walk again,’” said the actor. “[I’m] lucky to be alive,” he added.

Vasculitis is defined as the inflammation of the blood vessels that can ‘cause the walls of the blood vessels to thicken, which reduces the width of the passageway through the vessel.’ The disorder can be a short-term or long-lasting condition and can lead to organ and tissue damage.

The Actor has now Recovered

Ashton has fortunately recovered completely. “The minute you start seeing your obstacles as things that are made for you, to give you what you need, then life starts to get fun, right? You start surfing on top of your problems instead of living underneath them,” added the 44 year old actor.

After hearing about Ashton’s health battle, host Bear appreciated him for his resilience. He said, “What do they say in survival? Storms make you stronger. And I think he’s living proof of that.”

Kutcher was earlier Hospitalized in 2013

Ashton was hospitalized while he was preparing to play Steve Jobs in his 2013 film Jobs. His wife and actor Mila Kunis had talked about her husband’s hospitalization last year. She said, “He was so dumb. He only ate grapes at one point, it was so stupid. We ended up in the hospital twice with pancreatitis. So, fact check, yes, it was really dumb.”

Kutcher had also talked about his health then and said, “First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to like severe issues. I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was like doubled over in pain.”

Mila and Ashton met on the set of That ‘70s Show, which ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. They started dating years after the show wrapped and got married in 2015. The two are now set to reprise their roles on Netflix’s spinoff, That ‘90s Show.

Ashton recently talked about the show in an interview and said, “Mila and I were contemplating it. We thought, ‘Listen, we’re only in the position that we’re in because of that show, so let’s just go back and do this.’ We just went back and had fun for a week. It was so random and fun.”

Kutcher’s episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge airs on National Geographic on August 8 at 9 p.m. ET.
