Everything you need to know about the California Baby Bar exam

What is the Baby Bar exam?

First-Year Law Students’ Examination is the formal name of the “baby bar” exam.

A mandatory examination has been introduced by the state of California that needs to be cleared by the first-year law students attending unaccredited schools in order to continue their studies. Even though the name of the exam is “baby bar” it is not that easy.

There are four essays and 100 multiple-choice questions related to Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts in the exam that needs to be finished in seven hours in a single day. Students need to ensure they score a minimum of 560 on a scale of 800 to pass the examination. In other words, you need to achieve an accuracy rate of 70%.

As of now, in the United States, only California has this system of Baby Bar exams.

It is an alternate path offered without attending law school by “reading the law,” or apprenticing with a practicing lawyer or a judge.

Who all can take the Baby Bar exam?

Students who are pursuing their degree program at a State Bar-unaccredited registered law school through the Law Office Study Program and in the first year of the studies take this exam.

Baby Bar Exam is also taken by those without two years of college work attending a Committee of Bar Examiners or an American Bar Association-accredited law school.

Here is the Pass Rate of the Baby Bar exam

The pass rate of the exam is very low and it keeps changing over time for example in June 2020 it was 27.6 percent whereas in November 2020 it was 29.1 percent.

The fact of the matter is that the pass rate of the baby bar exam is much lower than the general exam pass rate.

The exam is held two times each year in the month of June and October.

Where is the Baby Bar exam held?

The exam is held in the state of California. This exam is an introductory one for the students who are studying in the first year and it does not require in-depth knowledge about the law.
