Succession, one of the most-watched shows on HBO, recently concluded its fourth season. The satirical drama, which first premiered in 2018, kept the viewers hooked as the Roy family fought among themselves for control over Waystar RoyCo.
The recent season introduced some major twists and turns and ended on a satisfying note. Fans of Succession are now wondering if and when the show will return with a fifth season. Read on to find out.
Will Succession Return with Season 5?
Unfortunately, Succession is not returning with a fifth season. The show has reached its conclusion and the season 4 finale, which aired on May 28th, served as the series finale. To end the show was purely a creative decision and had nothing to do with its ratings or performance.
In February 2023, Series creator Jesse Armstrong announced that the fourth season will be the final one as he did not ‘to stretch out the series for the sake of more episodes.’ He explained, “You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind.”
“From season 2, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that? And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons or two more seasons.”
“Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”
Will There Be a Spin-Off to Succession?
Armstrong had earlier also teased that while Succession will end with season 4, viewers might get to see a spin-off series based on one of the characters. However, HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi has now confirmed that no such series is in the works as of now.
“I’ll never say never but my instinct, and based on a number of conversations about the evolution of Succession and these characters, at this stage, there is no intention of spinning any one character off. Jesse, should he do a series again, I think it will be entirely original. Whether it’s based on IP or not, I’m not sure, but it will be a new show,” she stated.
How did Succession Season 4 End?
In the series finale, Kendall and Shiv collaborated to secure board votes to oppose the GoJo deal. They visited Caroline’s estate in Barbados, where Roman was recovering from injuries. Meanwhile, Matsson interviewed Tom and offered him the CEO position, while Greg revealed that Shiv won’t be chosen.
The siblings then formed an alliance, allowing Kendall to take charge. Upon their return to New York, Shiv discovered that Tom had been selected as CEO. The siblings attempted to sway the board but end up with a tied vote. Shiv voted in favor of the deal despite his protests and Tom eventually became CEO with his support.
