The 45-year old “Gasolina” singer and the “King of Reggaeton”, has shocked his fans with his retirement. However, he would be doing one last album “Legendaddy” and a tour before finally hanging up the mike. Let’s get to know his legacy.
Retirement plan at 45
The Puerto Rican rapper Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez aka Daddy Yankee posted a Youtube video announcing his retirement after 35 years in the music industry. He said:
“This race, which has been a marathon, finally sees the finish line. Now, I am going to enjoy what all of you have given me. People say that I made this genre worldwide, but it was you who gave me the key to open the doors to make it the biggest in the world.”
The legendary singer and rapper, has won 184 awards from 484 nominations. The “Despacito” star hasn’t revealed any reasons for such an early retirement from something that he loves the most. Here are a few reactions from fans:

About Yankee’s Farewell Tour
Daddy Yankee retires from music with his last album “Legendaddy” which releases on March 24, 2022. However, he starts with the final tour “La Última Vuelta World Tour” on August 10. In a statement, Daddy Yankee said:
“Today, I’m announcing my retirement from music by giving you my best production and my best concert tour. I will say goodbye to celebrating these 32 years of experience with this new collector’s item, the album “Legendaddy”. I’m going to give you all the styles that have defined me, in one single album.”
Legendaddy releases on March 24, 2022. Check out the tour dates below:
Fans are ardently waiting for their favourite star to perform one last time and damn, this album is going to create history! It comes as no surprise to me because Daddy Yankee has the title of one of the best-selling Latin music artists.
Daddy Yankee’s legacy
Ayla coined the word Reggaeton in 1994 to describe the new music genre that was emerging from Puerto Rico that synthesized American hip-hop, Latin Caribbean music, and Jamaican reggae rhythms with Spanish rapping and singing. The rapper is known for his style and sense of music. His previous studio albums include:
- No Mercy (1995)
- El Cangri.com (2003)
- Barrio Fino (2004)
- El Cartel: The Big Boss (2007)
- Mundial (2010)
- Prestige (2012)
Daddy Yankee has a more than three-decades-old music career. He has won several awards like five Latin Grammy Awards, 14 Latin Billboard Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, eight Lo Nuestro Awards, one MTV Video Music Award and six Ascap Awards.
Having sold more than 20 million records, Daddy Yankee truly holds a legendary history of hit albums. From dreaming of becoming a baseball player to becoming an influential music icon in the present-day world, Daddy Yankee has paved the way with his music to amplify the “marginalised” Latino identity.
FYI, Ayala is the first Latin artist to have signed a deal with Reebok to produce accessories and licensed clothing line “DY”. He has also appeared in three films and two television series.
We don’t know why he bid farewell to music at 45. His Instagram currently has 44.4 million followers and only one post. The star may be struggling in his personal life. Are you going to miss the man who set the world on fire with his Latin music? What do you think about his early retirement?
