Apple TV+ has canceled its drama series The Mosquito Coast after two seasons. The Justin Theroux and Melissa George starrer will not be returning with a third season. The development has come as a shock to many since the second season ended on a major cliffhanger.
The Mosquito Coast is based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Paul Theroux. The first two seasons served as a prequel to the book, and the third season was supposed to begin telling the story of the novel, which would not happen now.
The Mosquito Coast Canceled After Two Seasons
Apple has not yet announced the reason behind the move. The news seems even more surprising considering that the second season finale aired two weeks back and ended with a cliffhanger, leaving Allie’s fate in the balance.
Melissa George, who plays Margot Fox in the show, had previously talked about the possibility of a third season and said, “I mean, I guess they leave it quite open, like usual. There’s people arriving to the Mosquito Coast that are runaways like us, you know. Boats are coming in.”
“Does that mean that there’s other people in a similar situation to the Foxes? They leave it quite like a finale for a series, but I don’t really know what’s going to happen with the show,” she had added. The show’s fans are now disappointed with its cancelation and are expressing their sadness on social media.
Author Paul Theroux had Previously Hinted at the Plot of the Third Season
Theroux, the author of the bestselling novel, had earlier talked about what could the possible storyline in the third season if it gets made and said, “If there’s a third season, it would segue into the book itself, and the movie’s search for a utopian community.”
“But we don’t know at the end of the second season if Allie is part of this or if Margo is on her own. That’s the cliffhanger,” he added. He had also revealed that the show would further explore who Alfie is.
“You also notice there’s less and less chemistry in the second season between Allie and Margo, which is a springboard for a brilliant third season that circles back to the novel and actually identifies who Allie is,” he said, adding, “If there’s a third season, it would be about being invaded by people from the outside, looking to take advantage of them.”
The Mosquito Coast Premiered in 2021
The series began airing its 7-episode first season in April 2021. It followed a genius inventor but stubborn idealist Allie Fox, who uproots his family to Latin America, enraged with the corruption of the industrial world. The second season featured Allie and Margot going different paths to ensure the safety of their family.
The Mosquito Coast starred Justin Theroux as Allie Fox, Melissa George as Margot Fox, Gabriel Bateman as Charlie Fox, Ian Hart as William “Bill” Lee, Ariyon Bakare as Richard Beaumont, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Isela and Daniel Raymont as Guillermo Bautista.
