The nominations for the 2023 Oscars were finally announced on January 24, and just like every year, there was a fair share of surprises and shockers. A number of names, who were predicted to make the cut, ended up being snubbed from the final list.
Most notably, no female filmmaker has been nominated for best director, even after Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion won the trophy in the last two years. There are several other prominent names omitted from the list as well. Here, we discuss the biggest snubs of the 2023 Oscar nominations.
Oscar Nominations 2023 Biggest Snubs
Viola Davis, Best Actress, The Woman King: Viola Davis was widely appreciated for her role in The Woman King, and it looked almost certain that she would receive her fourth best actress nomination for the film this year. However, she was snubbed from the nomination list.
Eddie Redmayne, Best Actor, The Good Nurse: Eddie Redmayne starred as real-life serial killer Charlie Cullen in The Good Nurse and ended up receiving nominations at Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the SAG Awards. But he was omitted from the best actor or supporting actor category at the Oscars after having previously won the award for lead actor in The Theory of Everything.
Danielle Deadwyler, Best Actress, Till: Deadwyler, who landed SAG and Critics’ Choice nominations for playing Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till in the film Till, did not receive the best actress nomination at the Oscars, surprising everyone.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Best Picture: Black Panther (2018) created history by landing the best picture nomination, and people had the same expectations from its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, the film failed to land the nod at the Oscars, despite scoring a Producers’ Guild Nomination.
Taylor Swift, Best Original Song, Carolina: Taylor Swift’s original track Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing was shortlisted for the best song category. However, the song could not make it to the final list.
Paul Dano, Best Supporting Actor, The Fabelmans: Paul Dano earned Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards nominations for his portrayal of Sammy Fabelman’s pragmatic father, Burt, in The Fabelmans. The same was expected at the Oscars, but that did not happen.
RRR, Best Picture: S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR created a lot of buzz around the globe for its scale, story, and drama, and everyone expected the hype to translate to an Oscar nomination for best picture. However, the film was snubbed from the nod, though its foot-tapping number Naatu Naatu made it to the best original song category.
Tom Cruise, Best Actor, Top Gun: Maverick: Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun: Maverick revived the film business post-pandemic when it was released last year. The film was one of the highest-grossing films of the year, and the credit largely went to Cruise. However, the actor failed to make the cut for the lead actor nominations at the Oscars.
All Quiet on the Western Front, Best Editing: The German language film is eyeing an impressive run at the Oscars 2023 as it has scored nine nominations, including best picture. However, it missed the best editing nod, which is usually linked to the best picture nominees.
