Another day, another cancellation by Netflix! Neil Patrick Harris starrer Uncoupled has become the latest series to be axed by the streaming platform. The romantic comedy has been canceled after just one season.
The show’s fans are surprised by the development and are expressing their disappointment on social media. Uncoupled followed the life of a 40-something gay man, Michael Lawson, whose partner decides to leave him suddenly after being in a relationship for 17 years.
Uncoupled Canceled by Netflix After One Season
The eight-episode first season premiered on Netflix on July 29 last year, and since then, there had been no update on the show’s renewal. Almost six months later, on January 13, it was announced that the series would not return for another season.
The show was created by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman. Despite the cancellation of Uncoupled, Starr will continue to work with Netflix as he is the creator of another project on the streaming platform, the hit series Emily in Paris, which recently returned with its third season and is already renewed for season 4.
Uncoupled starred Neil Patrick Harris as a New York City-based real estate agent who ‘seemed to have it all — a supportive family, close friends and a loving, 17-year relationship with Colin (Tuc Watkins).’
“But when Colin unexpectedly moves out on the eve of his 50th birthday, Michael is completely blindsided. Overnight, he has to confront two nightmares: losing the man he thought was his soulmate, and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City,” read the official logline of the series.
The Reason Behind the Cancellation
The first season of Uncoupled was received well by the critics and audience, with a 73% critical approval rating and a 75% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the show was able to generate enough buzz, it did not translate into huge viewership.
Uncoupled season 1 stayed in the Netflix Top 10 list only for one week after its premiere. The show did not manage to attract the expected number of audiences, which is said to be the reason behind its cancellation.
Apart from Harris and Watkins, the show also starred Tisha Campbell as Suzanne Prentiss, Marcia Gay Harden as Claire Lewis, Emerson Brooks as Billy Burns, Brooks Ashmanskas as Stanley James, André De Shields as Jack, Nic Rouleau as Tyler Hawkins, and Colin Hanlon and Jai Rodriguez as the Jonathans.
Fans Disappointed with the News
Many fans are enraged with the show’s cancelation since the first season ended with a cliffhanger. “Uncoupled was genuinely one of the best sitcoms I’ve seen in years and he was brilliant. Swear @netflix / @NetflixUK didn’t give it a chance,” wrote a fan.
Another tweeted, “Uncoupled was on par with Emily in Paris, but I’d still to have seen the show develop. And it ended on a cliffhanger didn’t help.” A fan also wrote, “You really can’t trust Netflix to commit to any show unless it does stratospheric numbers. #Uncoupled was really smart and funny, a good show. That cliffhanger had me gagging for a season 2.”
