Former fashion model, Caitriona Balfe is now stealing fans’ hearts in Starz historical drama series ” The Outlander.” But do you know that she was rejected for this role at first? And the fact that the beauty first appeared in the film “The Devil Wears Parada”?
Who is Caitriona Balfe?
Caitriona Balfe is an Irish actress, producer (Picture Me & Outlander), and former fashion model. She was born on 4 October 1979 in Dublin, Ireland. Balfe’s appeared in various movies and television series like Money Monster, Ford v Ferrari, H+: The Digital Series, Outlander, and more.
After completing her Highschool graduation, the runway model studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Her initial career choice was indeed acting but life took some major turns and just a few months later she was doing opening and closing fashion shows for some major fashion brands.
How did Balfe end up being a runway model?
Balfe was intrigued by the entertainment world from the start, precisely acting. She, however, ended up getting scouted by a modeling agent in a local shopping center. Later Ford Model scout landed their eye on her and immediately called her to Paris. That’s how her journey of 250+ runway shows with some biggest fashion luxury brands like Givenchy, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and more started.
Caitriona Balfe was once even considered to be among the top 20 most-in-demand Models in the world. Her beauty ain’t no joke! But after working in the modeling industry for around 11 years, the beauty made her return to the acting world in 2009. (Maybe her passion for acting was reignited by her minor role in the 2007 movie “The Devil Wears Prada”)
Caitriona Balfe moved to Los Angeles to take acting classes once again and rebuilt her whole career. She continued her first few years by playing supporting characters in movies like Super 8, Now You See Me, Escape plan, etc. Her first breakthrough was Warner Bros’ web series H+: The Digital Series in 2012, where she played the character of Breanna Sheehan, an executive of a biotechnology company, Hplus Nano Teoranta in series.
How did she land the role of Claire Fraser in Outlander?
Well if talking about her acting career, the role of Claire Fraser in the Starz series was indeed in true terms her first “big break.” But the opportunity almost slipped through the fashion-model-turned-actress’ fingers. Around 2013, when Balfe gave the audition for the role of some “nurse,” which she didn’t know at that time was the character “Claire” adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s novel of the same name.
Caitriona was practically a new face in the entertainment industry. Thus, the only information she got regarding the role was a piece of paper with two lines logline, describing the character as “a nurse in 1940s.” With such bare minimum information, soon-to-be Claire in Television series tapped her audition and expectedly failed it.
But life had some other plans for Balfe. When she was on a shoot for her indie film in Belgium, her manager, who certainly never gave up on her (THANK GOD!!), arranged a meeting with a London agent again for the same role. And the minute that agent landed his eyes on our beauty, he knew it! She is the ONE!! Balfe, who already auditioned for the role of Claire, re-taped the demo video but this time a slightly more in-depth description of the character and plot setting. And yep, she cracked it and that’s how ladies and gentlemen we got our Claire Fraser in Starz.
Is Outlander’s star Caitriona Balfe married?
Although the fans of the historical-fiction-romance series “Outlander” are head over heels for the “hot and spicy” chemistry between our 18th-century onscreen couple, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. Some even wish that they date each other in real life, which is not possible for several reasons. Here’s why!)
First of all our star actress is already married to Irish music producer, Anthony McGill. Caitriona Balfe prefers to keep her life as much as private as she can. Her secretly dating McGill would have never been revealed to the world, if not for their fellow Irish actor friend Donal Brophy’s video on Instagram. The fashion queen was sitting on the lap of her beau, Anthony, playing the flute inside a bar on New Year’s Day.
The pair, despite being caught on the photographic evidence of their friend, avoided making any official appearance together until the 2017 Oscar Wilde Awards.
The offscreen pair after dating roughly around two years finally got engaged to each other on a vacation. Our Irish actress couldn’t help showing off her engagement ring on the red carpet of the Golden Globes Awards 2018.
The four-times Golden Globes nominated actress expressed her happiness saying, “It happened over the break. I’m very happy.”
Though some of the Outlander die-hard fans felt disappointed, which she highlighted in her interview with Parade magazine and said, “There’s a small vocal group that wanted it, which is just a testament to the characters that we portray, that the love story is so inspiring and so aspirational that people just really wanted to believe in it.” Caitriona cleared to fans that she is now engaged with someone else.
“Secret” Wedding in England
In August 2019, the duo held a private marriage ceremony with their close friends, which include Cait’s on-screen romantic interest, Sam Heughan, and family members at St. Mary’s Church in Bruton, Somerset, in the United Kingdom.
Balfe, however, kept her mouth shut regarding her marriage with McGill till November when her disappointed fans asked if there was any specific reason behind her not sharing any wedding photographs, to which she replied, “Cause that was for me, my husband and my family. Sorry…. but thank you for the love.”

The couple welcomed their “firstborn” baby
Just like Caitriona’s marriage ceremony, her pregnancy was also kept hidden from the fans. It is considered to be one of the reasons, behind the delay of Outlander season 6.
On August 18, 2021, Balfe shared an Instagram post, which showed the teeny-tiny hand of Balfe and McGill’s baby boy.
Outlander Season 6 is finally back on Starz in the US and StarzPlay in the UK. The first episode premiered on March 6th, 2022 and unlike its previous installments, this season will have only eight episodes.
