Orphan: First Kill released on Friday and is already being praised by the audiences. The film, which is a prequel to the 2009 psychological horror Orphan, features Esther impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family in America, after escaping from a psychiatric facility in Estonia.
The film has a lot of twists and turns, which have impressed the fans, and they have already started asking for a sequel. But is another Orphan film in the works? Read on to find out.
Is Orphan: First Kill getting a sequel?
Paramount has not yet officially announced a sequel to the film. However, the director of the film, William Brent Bell, has hinted that he is willing to make another in the series. Talking about a potential sequel, he said that a third film would be needed in order for Orphan to be considered a franchise.
Bell further said that if Orphan: First Kill is successful, a sequel to it could be made, which would have an even darker tone and will complete the story of Leena Klammer, aka Esther. Fans can get even more excited to learn that Bell has also signaled toward multiple sequels to Orphan.
Talking about the lead of the film, Isabelle Fuhrman, he said, “Isabelle is so passionate about the character…[she] can play this character forever… there’s a lot to that character, and I think in the future stories, she would probably become a bit more cold-hearted again.”
While it took 13 years to release the prequel after Orphan was released in 2009, Bell has confirmed that discussions for another film are already going on among the creatives and the studio, so it would not take that long to see Esther on screen again. Meanwhile. Fuhrman has also expressed her desire to portray the iconic, yet creepy, character again.
Orphan: First Kill Sequel Potential Storyline and Release Date
While Bell seemed positive about the sequel, it will largely depend on the performance of Orphan: First Kill. The film has been getting mostly positive reviews, with a rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, which should make way for a sequel. If the sequel does get green-lit, we might see the film arriving in 2023 or 2024.
The sequel will likely revolve around Esther living with a new family before meeting Kate and John Coleman. And, of course, she will have some new targets to kill. Isabelle Fuhrman will reprise her role as the spooky killer, while the rest of the cast can not be confirmed right now.
Isabelle Fuhrman Played the Role of a 9 Year Old in the Film
Orphan: First Kill created a lot of buzz as the film’s lead, Isabelle Fuhrman, who is now 25 years old had to play the role of 9 year old Leena Klammer. The production team did not use CGI, instead they depended on a combination of makeup and forced perspective shots to make Fuhrman look the part.
The film was announced in February 2020, with filming going on from November to December of the same year. The screenplay was written by David Coggeshall, with Alex Mace, Hal Sadoff, Ethan Erwin, and James Tomlinson serving as producers.
