House of the Dragon: Every Dragonrider in the Show and Which Side They are on in the Targaryen Civil War

The Targaryen civil war, termed the Dance of the Dragons, is about to begin in House of the Dragon. Both sides of the family: the blacks and the greens, own the marvelous beasts, and surely the side with mightier dragons will have an upper edge over their opponents.

Here we are explaining all the dragons that have been seen in the series so far and which side they are on. So you can fairly decide which side of the family looks stronger when it comes to ‘Dracarys’ their enemies.

Rhaenyra Targaryen: Syrax, Team Black

Syrax was the first dragon to appear in the first episode of House of the Dragon. This golden beast, belonging to Princess Rhaenyra, is named after a goddess of Old Valyria. Though not the biggest dragon in Westeros, Syrax is described as ‘huge and formidable’, and is known for her speed.

As per Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra became a dragonrider at the age of 7 after she bonded with Syrax. The dragon will surely give her an upper edge against her friend turned arch-rival Alicent, who is not a dragonrider.

Daemon Targaryen: Caraxes, Team Black

Another dragon that has made appearances since the very first episode is Caraxes, the ‘lean and red beast’ having a snake-like long neck. In the book, he is described as the ‘fiercest of all the young dragons in the Dragonpit.’

Caraxes has a huge appetite. He is ‘savage and cunning and battle-tested’ and is known to be brutal to enemies. The dragon initially belonged to Prince Aemon Targaryen, son of King Jaeherys, but was tamed by Daemon after his uncle’s death.

Aemond Targaryen: Vhagar, Team Green

Currently, the largest and the oldest dragon in the seven kingdoms, Vhagar, which helped Aegon the conqueror in his quest, belonged to Princess Laena Velaryon till her death in episode 6. In the following episode, the dragon is mounted by Prince Aemond, the second son of King Viserys and Alicent, giving the greens a significant advantage over the blacks.

As per the book, Vhagar’s ‘fires burned hot enough to melt stone.’ Her experience of battle, and her sheer size, make her the deadliest beast in Westeros.

Aegon II Targaryen: Sunfyre, Team Green

Although we see Sunfyre only briefly in the show, the golden dragon is described as ‘the most beautiful dragon ever seen in the known world’. The beast belongs to the new King, Aegon II Targaryen, the eldest son of Viserys and Alicent.

Helaena Targaryen: Dreamfyre, Team Green

Dreamfyre has not made an explicit entrance in the show till now; however, she has been mentioned several times over the course of the first season. The silver and blue colored beautiful beast now belongs to Princess Helaena, daughter of King Viserys and Alicent.

Rhaenys Targaryen: Meleys, Team Black

While Meleys made brief appearances in the beginning, she made quite an impact in episode 9 when she barged into the coronation of Aegon, horrifying the greens before flying out to help Rhaenyra.

Meleys is known as the ‘Red Queen’, for her scarlet color. She initially belonged to Viserys’ mother, Princess Alyssa Targaryen, but was mounted by Princess Rhaenys later.

Jacaerys Velaryon: Vermax, Team Black

If Alicent’s kids have their own dragons, Rhaenyra’s kids are also not far behind. Her eldest son Jacerys Velaryon mounts Vermax, who first made an appearance in episode 6 as the prince was trying to teach him to ‘Dracarys’.

Lucerys Velaryon: Arrax, Team Black

Rhaenyra’s second son and Jace’s younger brother, Luce, also has his own dragon. Described as a ‘pearlescent white beast’ in the books, Arrax is yet to appear in the show.

Seasmoke

The pale grey dragon, known for attacking his enemies silently, belonged to Laenor Velayron and played a huge role in the battle of the step stones. Now that Laenor has escaped across the narrow sea and is presumed dead, the fate of the dragon is not yet revealed.

While the blacks certainly have more dragons on their side, the greens have the humungous Vhagar to their advantage. It will now be interesting to watch the battle between the beasts and see who survives the dance of the dragons.
