Here is your handy guide to this month’s big releases. Start planning your Friday sick leaves accordingly.

1. “Manmarziyaan”

Starring: Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Abhishek Bachchan

Releasing on: Sept 14

Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this Bollywood romantic drama marks the return of Bachchan to the big screen after over a 2-year hiatus. It stars Pannu and Kaushal play Rumi and Vicky. The two are in love but he’s still a man-child who refuses to grow up. Frustrated and under pressure from her family, she agrees to marry Bachchan’s Robbie. This starts a dramatic and intense love triangle of sorts. The film will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before releasing in theaters.

2. “Love Sonia”

Starring: Freida Pinto, Mrunal Thakur, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee, Demi Moore, Mark Duplass

Releasing on: Sept 14

Tabrez Noorani’s much-awaited drama is based on real events. The film delves into human trafficking, prostitution, and the global sex trade network through the eyes of its central character, Thakur’s Sonia. The young girl goes on a quest to find her sister, entwining herself in dangerous situations. The film premiered at the London Indian Film Festival and was met with rave reviews.

3. “Batti Gul Meter Chalu”

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Yami Gautam

Releasing on: Sept 21

This film will focus on the electricity issues faced by rural places in India. Kapoor plays Sushil Kumar Pant, a carefree man and lawyer. His best friend is baring the brunt of unnecessary exorbitant electricity bills. After seeing his suffering, and that of his villagers, Sushil decides to go head-to-head with the greedy power distribution companies.

4. “The Sisters Brothers”

Starring: Riz Ahmed, John Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal

A dark Western comedy, “The Sisters Brothers” focuses on Eli and Charlie Sisters, two brothers (stay with us here!) who are hitmen. Their mission is to go after the man who has stolen from their boss. Ahmed stars as Hermann Warm, a chemist who has concocted a specific formula to find gold. If the film sounds intriguing and weird, it’s because it clearly is. It will make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sept 2nd before a theatrical release.

5. Sui Dhaaga

Starring: Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma

Releasing on: Sept 21

This Bollywood drama tells the story of Mauji, an unemployed tailor from a small village in India. Despite many attempts, he cannot find a stable job and is bullied by his neighbors, villagers, and even his father. His wife Mamta, an embroider, is the only one who supports him. Together, they decide to start their own garment business and employ women to provide them with means of independence. “Sui Dhaaga” is a heartwarming story. In fact, in order to promote the film, they crowdsourced skilled artisans from across the country to create logos and stick to the message of the film.
