‘Galaxy Quest’ TV Series Reportedly in Development at Paramount+

Galaxy Quest, the cult classic sci-fi film, is being adapted into a television series. Paramount+ and Paramount Television Studios are reported to be working on the show. The project is still in the initial phase.

The film released in 1999 and paid homage to science fiction films, especially Star Trek, in the form of a parody. It was a critical and commercial success and went on to achieve a cult status among fans. Read on to know all about the Galaxy Quest TV adaptation.

Paramount is Developing a Galaxy Quest TV Series

Mark Johnson, who produced the original film, will be serving as the executive producer of the television series. The Breaking Bad alum is currently the only member of the creative team attached to the project officially. Paramount Television Studios and Paramount+ are reportedly looking for a writer to pair up with Johnson.

More details on the series, including the cast and production timeline, have not been revealed yet. The studios have not commented on the project as of now. Galaxy Quest is the newest entry to the list of films being adapted for television.

Just a few days ago, HBO announced a seven-season Harry Potter series, covering the books in depth. Disney+ also released Willow, a spin-off to the 1988 film of the same name at the end of last year.

The Television Adaptation was Previously Attempted in 2015

This is not the first time that a show based on Galaxy Quest is reported to be in development. A similar attempt was made in 2015 when the rights of the series were sold to Amazon. The original cast of the film was supposed to return for the show and the film’s writer Robert Gordon was hired as the scriptwriter.

However, the project could not go further at the time due to the death of the film’s star Alan Rickman. Actor Sam Rockwell later talked about the series and said, “We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available — he has [Last Man Standing] — and everybody’s schedule was all weird.”

“It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill,” he added. There was no further update on the project and it was canceled later.

Galaxy Quest was a Parody of Star Trek

The film is known for its comic spoof of Star Trek and its fandom, along with other sci-fi franchises. It revolved around the cast members of a cult science fiction show, who are called up by aliens for help. They then have to defend a group of aliens from an alien warlord.

Apart from Rickman and Rockwell, Galaxy Quest also starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, and Robin Sachs. The film was directed by Dean Parisot with a screenplay from David Howard and Robert Gordon. It was made on a budget of $45 million and was able to gross $90 million at the box office.
