During a recent episode of “Headlines”, Wade told Rachel Nicholas how the hypocrisy of certain Florida politicians, forced him out of the state so their policies don’t negatively impact his family.
Dwayne Wade Stands Against Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation
Kudos to men like Dwayne Wade, who always stand up for the right. During a recent episode of “Headliners”, the former Miami Heat star told Rachel Nicholas, “That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” Wade explained. “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”
The decision to leave Florida in 2021 has to do with the state’s conservative political shift. But again, the former NBA star did recollect some of the fond memories from Florida, for instance, the tax breaks and the state’s decision to rename
“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” Wade told People, about anti-transgender laws which have recently been passed in Florida Miami-Dade County to “Miami-Wade” County in July 2010. Wade has a 16-year-old career with Heat and has won 3 NBA championships with the team.
Dwayne Wade Left Florida For Family!
The 41-year-old athlete did all of that for his beloved family. If you aren’t aware, his teenage daughter, Zaya, came out as transgender in 2020. Following a nasty legal battle with her mother, Siohvaughn Funches (married to Dwayne from 2002-2010), the 15-year-old was finally granted a legal name and gender change.
“I mean, obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great, but my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there,” Wade revealed.
Dwayne and his present-day wife, Gabrielle Union, have remained vocal about their support for Zaya, who feels, there is still a lot of work to be done. “I think it’s not my job, but it’s my honor to continue and further my family’s education and appreciation for the entire LBGTQ+ community as we grow together,” she spoke in a recent interview.
She continued, “As our understanding of acceptance has broadened over the past couple of years, we have made the strides to keep ourselves educated and combat the ignorance. Despite this, she expressed her gratitude towards her family for being her support system.
Recently, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, added some unacceptable wins to his agenda while targeting the LGBTQ+ community. The state board approved an expansion of what critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” law.
From passing bills on gender-transition treatments to keeping children out of drag shows, DeSantis has made “culture wars a priority” as he gears up for his run for the White House. What is your thought on this change?
