I come from a humongous family, with members spreading across the globe from the United States and Canada to the United Kingdom and India. I have approximately 30 cousins each on both my maternal and paternal side. And that’s not counting extended fam bam, you know, cousins of cousins, close family friends, and people from the community I’ve grown up with.

All of these relatives and loved ones have up and decided to get married in, what seems like, a conspiracy to have me lugging around big, blingy, bulky lehenga and dropping a bunch of money I don’t have. Allow me to explain and what this has to do with your own struggles.

In any given year, there are, on average, what seems like kabazillion weddings to attend of people I’m close to. Not going is not an option. And if I go, not looking stunning is also not an option.

Another challenge is there are multiple weddings in any one of the aforementioned countries which means packing for a desi wedding is an endeavor in itself.  What’s more, desi weddings festivities span over a week. Multiple wedding festivities = multiple outfit changes = a broke AF Nila (and suitcase).

Shaadi outfits come with hefty price tags, too.  And with such exorbitant costs, yet another challenge is this: I can’t commit the fashion faux pas of wearing the same outfit to multiple events in one calendar year. So essentially I’m spending a lot of money wearing an outfit once, maybe twice, before zoop! The style is out of fashion and I can no longer get more mileage from it. What’s a shaadi-hoppin’ budget-conscious fashionista to do?!

I may just have a solution, one that you’ll thank me for the closer we get to wedding season. Don’t buy new outfits. Rent ’em!

There are multiple online shops that deliver rented desi clothing. We have names of companies that just deliver within the U.S., U.K., and India, and even one company that delivers worldwide. This means you don’t have to travel with clothing and accessories. Plan ahead and you could even order in the country you’re visiting and have your outfit delivered to you there.

Perhaps the best feature of these rental shops is that you can rock a fabulous lehengha, sari, or kurta-pajama at the next wedding you have to attend for a fraction of the price. Looking fabulous, saving money, and never repeating an outfit just became doable.

Check out these popular sites you can rent your next outfit from:

1. Borrow it Bindaas

Borrow it Bindaas was founded by Riddhi and Siddhi, sisters who loved playing dress-up with their mom’s saris growing up. As they grew older, they began building their own collection of desi outfits but the high cost of trendy outfits stumped them. They began swapping outfits with friends and relatives which is where they came up with the idea for their online boutique. At Borrow it Bindaas you can rent or even buy the latest Indian apparel and accessories at 80% off retail value.

The founders handpick their inventory for the best products and they offer everything from saris to menswear as well as jewelry. The company ships 2 sizes with a pre-stamped return envelope and they take care of dry cleaning and tailoring.
