The success of a Bollywood film is determined by box office sales which determines why a film is labeled a “hit” or “semi-hit” even though the storyline is soggier than yesterday’s enchilada.
A filmmaker hasn’t necessarily created a gem just because s/he makes bank off a movie. You may be surprised at the type of movies you’ll find at the top of the official Box Office India list of all-time blockbusters.
What isn’t a surprise, however, is the number of Khan-lead movies on our list. Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Saif Ali Khan films occupy the majority. Heroes Sunny Deol, Mohnish Behl, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, and Hrithik Roshan sneak into the top 20 box office hits. The list features films starring talented and stunning heroines like Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Karishma Kapoor, Ameesha Patel, Rani Mukherji, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Raveena Tandon, and even newer actresses like Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, and Katrina Kaif.

This film starring Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Salman Khan is a classic love story that teaches you real love doesn’t always mean getting the girl of your dreams. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice for the greater good. 2. Baahubali 2- The Conclusion
The sequel to “Bahubali” released April 2017 and it instantly shot to the top of the all-time blockbusters list on India’s Box Office charts! The film is about Shiva, the son of Baahubali, and his search to learn more about his heritage. The story of epic proportions has an adjusted net gross of ₹5,10,36,00,000.
3. Gadar —Ek Prem Katha
“Gadar—Ek Prem Katha” stars Sunny Deol as a Sikh truck driver who falls for the lovely Ameesha Patel, a Muslim girl, during the rough times of partition in India. The film has an adjusted net gross of ₹4,68,40,71,260, it held the position of second highest grossing film for years until the release of “Bahubali 2” this year, knocking it down to slot

4. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
Who doesn’t know DDLJ? This iconic film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is one of the longest-running films in Bollywood. The film’s adjusted net gross is ₹4,44,300,74,020. Are you surprised it’s not in the number one or two spot on the list?
5. Raja Hindustani
Rich girl Karishma Kapoor and small-town taxi driver Aamir Khan had the world feeling all types of emotions with their love story of two people from vastly different backgrounds. The film’s adjusted net gross ₹3,79,51,04,500 lands as number 5 on the all-time blockbuster list.
The inspirational film released December of 2016 and it is already within the top 10. “Dangal” is loosely based on the life of former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and how he trained his daughters Geeta and Babita to follow in his footsteps to be world class winners amidst sexism. The film has an adjusted net gross of ₹3,74,53,00,000.
“Border” follows the life of soldiers during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. It had an all-star cast including Akshay Khanna, Sunil Shetty, Tabu, Rakhee, Pooja Bhatt, Jackie Shroff, and more. The film grossed ₹3,43,46,27,460.
Known for his unique choice of films, Aamir Khan’s “PK” breaks all barriers and questioned things humans take for granted. The film also starred Anushka Sharma in a weird haircut, but we can let that go for now. The film made an adjusted net gross ₹3,37,72,50,00.
9. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Can you believe KKHH is only at number 9? This iconic film starring Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, and Shah Rukh Khan is a sweet love triangle which taught us “pyaar dosti hain.” It’s also the start of Karan Johar’s reign of epic Bollywood romance films. How much did this hit make? KKHH took home an adjusted net gross of ₹3,30,26,43,960.
10. Bajrangi Bhaijaan
For a film that was recently released, it is insane how quick Salman Khan’s “Bajrani Bhaijaan” has reached the number 10 spot! The film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This film had an adjusted net gross of ₹3,28,03,22,540.
11. 3 Idiots
Another one of Aamir Khan’s stellar films with a message, “3 Idiots” is film deserving of its spot among the top 20 box office hits of all time. The film had an adjusted net gross of ₹2,94,39,26,700.
“3 Idiots” taught us to chase as excellence as success would follow, but don’t chase success because you won’t learn anything along the way. This Aamir Khan flick also started R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor.
12. Dhoom 3
The “Dhoom” franchise has been wildly successful so there’s no surprise that “Dhoom 3” has made it to the top 20 list. The third addition to the franchise brings back Uday Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and Rimi Sen, along with Aamir Khan as the new villain and Katrina Kaif as his lady love. Kaif seriously killed it with her acrobatics, action, and dancing in this flick. The film made an adjusted net gross of ₹2,75,94,27,660
This wrestling flick took everyone by surprise with its emotional story. Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma star in this hit film filled with music, romance, and sports. “Sultan” really touched the hearts of fans and their love resulted in the film’s adjusted net gross of ₹3,00,67,25,000 bringing it to spot number 13 in the all-time blockbuster list.
14. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Another Karan Johar flick hits the box office hit list, this all-star family story taught us the importance of keeping a family together. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Alok Nath and Farida Jalal. Epic casting, epic music, epic cinematography, epic everything actually, with dialogues that will live on forever!
How much did this film rake in? Well, K3G has an adjusted net gross of ₹2,88,72,43,260.
15. Kaho Na Pyaar Hai
“Kaho Na Pyaar Hai” launched Rakesh Roshan’s son, Hrithik Roshan as well as the lovely Ameesha Patel into superstardom with its success. A story of love, loss, and revenge, “Kaho Na Pyaar Hai” was an instant cult classic. This romantic flick has an adjusted net gross of ₹2,84,00,07,060.
16. Karan Arjun
Fans are actually dying to see a remake of this classic 90s flick starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. “Karan Arjun” was the story of 2 brothers killed by evil inheritance stealing relatives, but the boys are reborn and return to avenge the death of their father and themselves. The film has an adjusted net gross of ₹2,77,05,42,060.
I’m actually surprised to see “Karan Arjun” above films like “Dabangg,” “Kick,” “Chennai Express” and “Dil Toh Pagal Hai.”
17. Dil Toh Pagal Hai
Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Karishma Kapoor dance up a storm in the love triangle of “Dil Toh Pagal Hai.” The romantic flick is still a fan favorite, with young girls still dreaming of their own Shah Rukh’s singing “Bholi Si Surat” while waiting for them. The flick brought home an adjusted net gross of ₹2,73,34,01,440 which places it at number 17.

18. Hum Saath Saath Hain
This happy family drama has a song every 5.8 minutes but hey, who’s complaining? With a huge cast of Alok Nath, Rema Lagoo, Monish Behl, Tabu, Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, and Mahesh Thakur there is a lot to love about HSSH. The happy family film is a sweet drama about sibling love how one person’s stubborn views can break a loving family apart.
This flick has an adjusted net gross of ₹2,64,13,37,160.
Yash Chopra launched his younger son, Uday Chopra in this multi-starrer film about love lasting eternally. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwariya Rai Bachchan, Jimmy Shergill, Preity Jhanghiani, Kim Sharma, Shamita Shetty and Jugal Hansraj.
The film about young love set the bar for all teen romances in the 2000s. It also gave us songs that we’d be performing at bhai’s shaadi’s for years to come. “Mohabbatein” had an adjusted net gross of ₹2,47,50,84,260.
20. Chennai Express
This hilarious romantic comedy starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone will have you rolling on the floor laughing at its corny jokes and misadventures. With all the references to old school movies and the amazing comic timing of Padukone and Khan, it’s no surprise this hit film rounds out the top 20 hits. The adjusted net gross of this film is ₹2,33,65,24,740.
