Who knew Rohit Shetty’s silly comedy with a ghost story embedded in it would be the surprise hit of the year? “Golmaal Again!!!” has become the 2017 film with the second highest net gross in India after “Bahubaali 2: The Conclusion.” “Judwaa 2” currently holds the third spot.

They crushed the box office records in the first and second week of the release with a net gross of 1,35,91,00,000 rupees (and counting) according to the latest count on Box Office India. Since the film’s release on October 20th, the count is only reaching higher even as we hit past the second week of the film’s release.

“Golmaal Again!!!” is the fourth installment in director Rohit Shetty’s highly successful Golmaal series. The Golmaal franchise as a whole has been a huge success over the years, it is listed as one of the most popular franchises in India. Shetty continues to make us laugh with the comic stylings of Ajay Devgn as Gopal, Arshad Warsi as Madhav, and Tusshar Kapoor as Lucky. There’s also both Kunal Khemu and Shreyas Talpade playing characters named Laxman. There are even some recurring characters throughout the series, like Vasuli Bhai played by Mukesh Tiwari.

The film had some serious competition with Aamir Khan’s “Secret Superstar.” Khan’s film promised a fairy tale about a young girl who pursues her dream of being a singer secretly due to a strict, conservative father. The actual story centers around the mother’s journey to escape her abusive husband. Moviegoers got a heavy dose of reality instead of the feel-good fairytale they were expecting.

Though a powerful story, it may have been too heavy for a Diwali release. Audiences tend to prefer a light-hearted film during the holiday. Enter the mindless comedy, “Golmaal Again!!!” “Secret Superstar” may come highly rated by critics but the box office results don’t reflect the movie’s quality. Khan’s film released on Thursday, the day of Diwali, which was actually detrimental to their profits as people don’t tend to spend the day of Diwali at the theaters but with their families instead. “Golmaal Again!!!” released on Friday, the day after the holiday which allowed for fans to make time to go to the theaters to see the film.

Although the multiple subplots of “Secret Superstar” are beautifully intertwined, some audiences may have felt it was too much drama for one film. Khan’s role in the film is important but short which is why some felt it wasn’t a “real Aamir Khan film” even though he is the producer. Zaira Wasim has proved her talents in “Dangal” but it is too early in her career for her to have the star power to carry a film on her own. With that being said, Wasim still does a magnificent job in the film and is deserving of the attention the film has gotten.

And the ‘Diwali’ kinda feeling continues with your unending love ❤️….thank you our audience! @golmaalmovie

“We waited more than 7 years for the right subject to take the Golmaal franchise forward,” director and producer, Rohit Shetty, said. “What we have achieved is very exciting and humbling, all thanks to the love showered upon us by fans across the globe.”

The stars of Golmaal have been continuously thanking fans on social media for the love and support. Parineeti Chopra has even been a part of special screenings for many events including one for underprivileged children and multiple events for children with cancer as a way to give back and bring smiles to these little ones.

Fans loved the film so much they went out of their way to stop the piracy of the film. More than 20,000 piracy links were brought to the attention of the “Golmaal” team and have been taken down. That’s some real love from fans.

It wasn’t easy for “Golmaal Again!!!” to win this coveted second place position in India. Though Khan’s film raked in some amazing reviews, it was Shetty’s no-logic comedy that took home the box office prize.
