‘Untamed’ Author Glennon Doyle Reveals Anorexia Diagnosis

Glennon Doyle is spilling the beans on being diagnosed with anorexia nervosa! The Untamed author opened up about her diagnosis with anorexia nervosa in the latest episode of her podcast, We Can Do Hard Things.

The author and activist best known for her books such as Love Warrior and Carry On, Warrior talked about her recent eating disorder diagnosis in detail on her podcast. Read on to know more about Glennon’s anorexia diagnosis.

Glennon Doyle shares her anorexia diagnosis on her podcast

In the latest episode of her podcast, We Can Do Hard Things, the Love Warrior author talked about her struggle with bulimia. She shared that she has recently been diagnosed with anorexia. She also stated that she was surprised when she got to learn about her diagnosis.

“There is no way I can explain to you the level of bafflement, shock, denial, confusion,” Glennon said on the podcast, which she co-hosts with her wife and soccer star Abby Wambach and her sister Amanda Doyle.

Doyle went on to say that at first, she sought medical help for a bulimia relapse. She further added, “I said [to the doctors], I am a bulimic and I have been recovered … and I am having relapses, and I just need to understand … how to get these relapses of my bulimia under control so I can be less scared and freer and not in danger.”

The Carry On, Warrior author revealed that after getting evaluated she got the bad news from her doctor that based on her history as well as medical tests, she was actually anorexic.

Doyle added, “The shift of my identity as bulimic, bulimic, bulimic… anorexia is a totally different thing. It’s like a different religion. It’s a different identity. It’s a different way of thinking, It’s so confusing and it shook me very deeply. And I did not believe it.”

What is anorexia nervosa?

According to Mayo Clinic, anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight.

Some physical symptoms of anorexia nervosa are as follows: extreme weight loss or not making expected developmental weight gains, thin appearance, abnormal blood counts, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness or fainting.

Glennon told her Instagram followers that she would be making an announcement about her mental health. She took to her Instagram and started by writing, “On the pod today i’m sharing about my new diagnosis and my first brutiful steps of recovery.”

Doyle further added, “i’m not waiting to speak until i have my ‘tada’ moment because if I do, I’ll never speak. this year, we are going to be messy and complicated and afraid and show up anyway.”
