The politician was born in the city of Glasgow in 1985 to first-generation immigrant parents from Pakistan. His grandfather worked in a sewing machine factory, while his father worked as an accountant. Political Career
Yousaf started his political journey by participating in student politics and serving as the president of the Glasgow University Student Representative Council in 2006. In 2011, Yousaf was elected to the Scottish Parliament representing Glasgow. The following year, he was appointed Minister for External Affairs and International Development, becoming the youngest minister in the Scottish Government’s history at 27 years old.

In 2018, Yousaf was made Cabinet Secretary for Justice, where he oversaw the implementation of key reforms in the Scottish justice system. Two years later, he was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care and was appreciated for his work in handling the Covid pandemic.
SNP Leadership and First Minister
In February 2023, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation from the leadership of the SNP, which resulted in a leadership election within the party. Yousaf declared himself as a candidate for leadership against Kate Forbes and Ash Regan on February 18.
On March 27, he won the elections with 52% votes and was announced as the next First Minister. “I will be a First Minister for all of Scotland. I will work every minute of every day to earn and to re-earn your respect and your trust. To serve my country as First Minister will be the greatest privilege and honor of my life,” he said after winning the leadership.
