Gordan’s longtime agent Victoria Lord confirmed the news of his death. He died Monday evening in Toronto at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Not much is known about the cause of his death.

In the year 2012, Gordon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his contribution to the music world. He garnered the attention of the people in the United States in 1970 with his song If You Could Read My Mind. He even bagged a Grammy nomination for his hit track.

Soon after, Lightfoot learned different instruments like piano, drums, and percussion. He started performing at concerts in Ontario. In 1962, he released two tracks: Remember Me I’m the One and Negotiations/It’s Too Late, He Wins. Both the songs got positive feedback.

During his career, Gordon’s songs were performed by many renowned musicians like Elvis Presley, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, and more. At one time, Bob Dylan talked about Lightfoot and said, “Every time I hear a song of his, I wish it would last forever.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to his Twitter page and tweeted, “We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters. Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever.”

Stephen King shared, “Gordon Lightfoot has died. He was a great songwriter and a wonderful performer. Sundown, you better take care/If I catch you creepin’ ’round my back stairs.”

Broadcaster Joe Bowen chimed in, “Very sad day with the passing of Canadian Icon Gordon Lightfoot. His longtime drummer Barry Keane arranged for us to meet Gordon several times. A huge piece of Canadian Music History has left us. RIP Gordon.”
