David Beckham’s appeal to his fans
Beckham, an ambassador for Unicef for almost 17 years now, made an appeal to his social followers to come forward and donate to the charity, which is working relentlessly in Ukraine to assist families by providing clean drinking water and food. UNICEF is also providing ready-to-use kits to maternity hospitals.
Speaking in a video on Instagram, David Beckham said, “Hi everyone, so I’m handing over my social media to Iryna, the Head of the Regional Perinatal Centre in Kharkiv, Ukraine where she is helping pregnant mothers give birth safely. Thanks to your donations, the oxygen generators they have received are helping newborns survive in appalling conditions.”
He added, “Head over to my stories to learn more about the amazing work Iryna and health workers like her are doing to save lives in Ukraine. Please give what you can to support @UNICEF and people like Iryna using the donation link in my bio”.
Kharkiv is the second biggest city in Ukraine which has experienced severe devastation because of Russian shelling for more than 20 days now.
Dr. Iryna revealed the brutal reality of war and how beautiful cities that took years to build and carry rich heritage have been decimated leaving vulnerable new mothers homeless.
Dr Iryna said, “On the first day of the war, all pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement. It was a terrible three hours that we spent together. The first days were the most difficult. We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes. We are probably risking our lives but we don’t think about it at all. We love our work. Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry but none of us will give up.”
She added, “Now. I’m not only the head of the center but I continue to work as a pediatric anesthesiologist. I unload cargo, work on logistics and offer emotional support. UNICEF’s support is very important to us, They have been delivering supplies in Ukraine for years and they have good logistics to deliver ready-to-use kits to maternity hospitals.
David Beckham and his wife Victoria, who was a singer with the Spice Girls, have donated monetary help of 1 million pounds to fund the organization’s work in Ukraine.
