Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins Friendship Over the Years

The world of rock is aghast after the news of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins‘s death was confirmed on social media by the band on Friday, 25th March.

The band was all set to take the stage on fire on March 25, 2022, at Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá, Colombia. However, destiny had something else as Taylor Hawkins took his last breath on this unfortunate day.

One interesting thing that comes instantly into the mind of people who know him or follow him is his camaraderie with the Foo Fighter’s singer, guitarist, and founder, Dave Grohl. Their status as best pals is arguably the one that really stands out.

This is one of the reasons why Hawkins spent more than 20 years in the history of the band and longest-tenured member after Grohl and founding bassist Nate Mendel.

Let us now try to explore more about their strong friendship over the years.

Decoding Dave Grohl’s friendship with Taylor Hawkins

Dave Grohl published his latest book titled “The Storyteller” in 2021 where he addressed Hawkins as his “brother from another mother, my best friend, a man for whom I would take a bullet.”

He wrote, “Upon first meeting, our bond was immediate, and we grew closer with every day, every song, every note that we ever played together”.

During their professional career as musicians, both Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins have performed with a few of their heroes like Queen, Paul McCartney, and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, among others.

It all started in the year 1997 when Foo Fighters delivered their successful album and work was in progress for their next successful album. Unfortunately, they were running short of one member as drummer William Goldsmith quit the band because of creative differences.

This was the time when Taylor Hawkins who was earlier associated with Alanis Morissette’s backing band as Drummer replaced Goldsmith.

First meeting of Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins

Dave Grohl was under the impression that Hawkins might not be interested in joining their band as he was backing up one of the rock scene’s brightest stars. However, things moved in the right direction instantly during their first meeting.

Dave Grohl recalled his meeting with Taylor in an interview saying, “The first time we met, we were at some radio show backstage, and he came up with a beer in his hand. He’s like, ‘Hey, man, what’s up? I’m Taylor, I play with Alanis Morissette. Dude, I love your record, it’s so cool!’ He was such a spaz. I was like, ‘Wow, you’re either my twin or my spirit animal, or my best friend!’ In the first 10 seconds of meeting him.”

He added, “When it was time to look for a drummer, I wished that he would do it but I didn’t imagine he would leave Alanis Morissette because at the time she was the biggest artist in the world. So when I called him and said, ‘Hey, I’m looking for a drummer. You know I’m your guy.’ And I think it had more to do with our personal relationship than anything musical. And to be honest, it still does.”

Both Dave and Taylor used to spend time together along with their family be it going out shopping on the occasion of father’s day or attending Grammys.
