Dragon’s Dogma 2 Finally Announced; Sequel is in Development using RE Engine

Capcom has finally announced the sequel to 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma at the end of its 10-year anniversary celebration live stream. The sequel, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently in development as confirmed by Capcom veteran and original game’s director Hideaki Itsuno.

Dragon’s Dogma launched in 2012 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The title got a major expansion called Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen the following year, and then got PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch port in the next few years.

Now, the widely popular fantasy action RPG is getting a sequel after fans called for the same for around ten years. Previously, Capcom-related leaks also hinted that the developer is also working on another Dragon’s Dogma game. It’s finally confirmed to be coming.

Capcom Announced Dragon’s Dogma 2 at 10-year Anniversary Livestream

Hideaki Itsuno, the director of the original Dragon Dogma (2012), has announced the sequel- Dragon’s Dogma 2 at the end of the “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma live stream” today. The Capcom veteran whipped his jacket off to reveal a t-shirt having the sequel’s first logo.

The director was also joined by Dragon’s Dogma art director Daigo Ikeno and environment art lead Kenichi Suzuki. They’ll be joining Itsuno to work on the sequel.

Sorry to have kept you waiting!” Itsuno said. “Everyone in the development team is hard at work creating a game that we hope you will enjoy. Please look forward to it!” he added.

Later, Capcom further confirmed the game with a press release. After waiting for around 10 years, the cult-classic action RPG fans are finally getting the much-awaited sequel. However, we don’t know much about the upcoming sequel yet.

Dragon’s Dogma focused on real-time combat in a dark medieval fantasy world in the duchy of Gransys. It had a deep action system, AI-controlled allies, and deep RPG roots allowing you to ride dragons. The sequel will likely retain the core concept while adding a number of new elements.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is officially in development and will be using the RE Engine

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is now confirmed to be in development officially. Following the live stream, Capcom posted a tweet that revealed that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is being with the RE Engine. It’s also known as the “Reach for the Moon Engine.”

It’s the same engine that has recently been used for the last series of Resident Evil games and Monster Hunter Rise. The RE Engine has also powered 2019’s Devil May Cry 5 and will also be used in the upcoming Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4: Remake.

Other than that, the developer didn’t reveal many details about the upcoming sequel. We’ll find more information possibly in the coming months.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 was Teased Previously in Leaks & Rumors

Dragon’s Dogma launched in 2012, and its major expansion Dark Arisen was released in 2013. Since then, the game has been dormant and only received ports to PC in 2016, PS4 and Xbox One in 2017, and Nintendo Switch in 2019.

However, fans for the critically under-rated title have been calling for a sequel but Capcom never really provided a clear answer. In September 2020, Dragon’s Dogma also got an animated Netflix original series with seven episodes, giving fans hope.

Later, the Capcom data breach in November 2020 and Nvidia GeForce Now leak in September 2021 had references related to Dragon’s Dogma 2, teasing fans about the sequel.

Recently, Capcom stated during an investor relations Q&A that it may revive some of its dormant game series. “We are currently putting together plans for our pipeline based on-demand data from the market. Going forward, we will continue to take customers’ wishes into consideration while devising our title lineup.”

Fans found it as a clear signal that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is coming and the announcement of the 10-Year Anniversary live stream made them believe that the time has come. It turned out to be true as Capcom announced the sequel ten years after the original game.

What could be the release date for Dragon’s Dogma 2?

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is confirmed to be in development and the process will potentially take a few years. We may not find out about the release date of Dragon’s Dogma 2 until at least late 2024.

Capcom is currently focused on Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Pragmata. Once the three major titles are available on consoles, the developer can shift its complete attention to Dragon’s Dogma’s sequel.

Until then, you can replay the original game and re-live the good old days while waiting for another announcement about the sequel’s release date. Are you looking forward to it? Share your reactions in the comments.
