One of the most popular superhero video game series is the Batman Arkham series. In the early 2000s, video games based on superheroes couldn’t match the high expectations of fans since they were just inadequate adaptations of the successful superhero films to hit the big screen.

In the early 2000s, there were no superhero video games that have established a name in the gaming world.  The excitement around superhero games at the time was short-lived, as other popular games in other genres swiftly surpassed them.

Things began to shift in August of 2009 when a new game came out. With this title, an enormously successful and well-known video game series got its start. In 2009, the Batman Arkham series began to spread in the gaming world.

Batman Arkham Games in Order of its Release

1. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Release Year – 2009
Supported Device – Xbox360, Xbox One, Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4

The series’ first game was Batman: Arkham Asylum. This game was based on the incident when the Joker escaped jail. A team of other criminals assist him to take over the facility, allowing Batman to restore order and solve the crisis.

The game is well-executed and features a lot of stealth parts blended with basic yet interesting combat elements. This game is available on various devices as mentioned above.

2. Batman: Arkham City

Release Year – 2011
Supported Device – Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Wii U, Mac OS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Not soon after the success of Arkham Asylum, the next part i.e. Arkham City was released. After the events of Arkham Asylum, the Arkham criminals, led by Dr Hugo Strange, take over a part of Gotham City and turn it into Arkham City. Catwoman makes her debut in this chapter, and she also appeared in some sections of the game.

3. Batman: Arkham Origins

Release Year – 2013
Supported Device – Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows.

Here we have the third part of the series. Batman: Arkham Origins is a prequel to Arkham Asylum, as the title implies. The third part of the series was published in 2013 by WB Montreal.

The game is based on Bruce Wayne’s early career while being pursued by Black Mask and eight assassins. The gameplay was nearly identical to that of its other parts.

4. Batman: Arkham Knight

Release Year – 2015
Supported Device – Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.

In the main series, this is the fourth game, and it’s currently the most recent.

It picks off where Arkham City left off, except this time the action takes place in Gotham City’s streets. In this game, the major antagonists are Scarecrow and Arkham Knight, a mystery character.

The Batmobile’s inclusion was a major asset for this part’s gameplay. In other aspects, the gameplay was mostly unchanged, with just a few tweaks.

Batman Arkham Games – Spinoff Series and Expansion

Other than the main series of Batman Arkham, there were some portable series and expansions. These are mentioned below.

1. Batman: Arkham City Lockdown

Release Year – 2011
Supported Device – iOS(2011) and Android(2013)

This game was initially built for iOS mobile users in 2011. But, in 2013, it was extended to android users as well. But, as of now, both the games have been removed from their respective stores.

The game saw the return of many characters from Arkham City and Arkham Asylum. This chapter focused mostly on fighting rather than the plot.

2. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate

Release Year – 2013
Supported Device – Nintendo 3DS, Playstation Vita, Windows, Playstation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360

Batman: Arkham Asylum Blackgate is a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Origins, which came out the same year.

This game was a 2.5D side-scrolling game, that mainly prioritized hand-held gaming devices.  Prior to its release on other platforms, this game was exclusively available on Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita systems.

In 2014, it was, nevertheless, released for Windows, Playstation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360.

Despite the fact that it isn’t a 3D game, it manages to retain the main version’s smooth fighting and flawless stealth sequences.

3. Batman: Arkham VR

Release Year – 2016
Supported Device – Playstation VR, Windows(2017)

An action-adventure game, Batman: Arkham VR was first launched in October 2016 for the Playstation VR.

The Arkham VR takes between the events of Arkham City and Arkham Knight.  In contrast to earlier games, the player is not required to participate in any battle; instead, the emphasis is on solving puzzles and exploring the world.

The main character batman investigates the kidnapping of Robin and Nightwing. This happens after the events of Batman: Arkham City when they mysteriously vanished. This adventure game was published for Windows in 2017.
