How Did Marilyn Monroe Die? Official Report and Theories

It happened in the pre-dawn hours of August 5, 1962, when her housekeeper and psychiatrist noticed that she had become unresponsive inside the bedroom of her house at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in the Brentwood neighborhood of LA. Upon breaking through her window, they came to terms with the awful truth – the most celebrated actress of her time, Marilyn Monroe, died in the waning hours of August 4. She was only 36 years old. What it looked like back then was a barbiturate overdose.

Marilyn Monroe doesn’t need any introduction. She was a worldwide icon in an era when being an icon truly meant something. She was glamorous, talented, extra beautiful, and was linked to some of the most high-profile and admired men. Her demise put the whole world in sadness. The fans couldn’t accept that their favorite star was no more with them.

It’s been a long time since her death, yet many theories revolve around the unfortunate incident. Here are a few of them.

Marilyn Died By Overdose

An official coroner ruled that the actress’s untimely death at 36 was nothing but an overdose of sleeping pills. It suggested that she tried to commit suicide. She was found unresponsive in her bed next to the bottles of pills.

Following her death, the case was reopened in 1982. The original finding remains unaltered with a district attorney mentioning that Monroe either took her own life or died accidentally. The case was closed.

Kennedy Brothers’ Connection

There are various inconsistencies with the time, location, and who exactly was at the scene when the actress died. A surveillance expert Reed Wilson stated that Bobby Kennedy called Monroe on the night of her death, who claimed that she told him to leave her alone.

The housekeeper, Eunice Murray, claimed to have found her body around 3 am. However, the widow of her publicist Arthur Jacobs, Natalie Jacobs, says that her husband was called with the news that she had died around 11 pm the same night.

Was Marilyn Monroe Murdered?

Some theories also suggest that Marilyn Monroe did not die but was murdered. It is because all the circumstances surrounding her death were a little murky. However, no such confirmation was released whether the actress committed suicide or was murdered.

Netflix’s documentary, The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes, is creating buzz all over the internet. This documentary explores all the conspiracy theories and the circumstances that revolved around the death of the actress, which further haunted the whole world for long.

The new film uses all the archival material belonging to the investigative journalist, Anthony Summers. He collated it for the biography of the actress in 1985, Goddess. The documentary also includes unheard recordings of those who knew Marilyn closely.

Summers explains how he was commissioned by a famous British newspaper editor to examine the story of the actress in 1982 when her case was reopened. There is a lot that remains unknown about the last moments of the actress. Summers states, “the true things rarely get into circulation. It’s usually the false things.”
