How to Enable Snapchat Dark Mode on Android as the Feature is Only Launched for Paid Subscribers

Snapchat has finally given in to the demands of Android users by introducing Dark Mode, a feature that has been available in iOS devices for over two years now. However, there is a catch.

Unlike Apple users, who can switch to Dark Mode at any time for free, Android users need to pay for the feature. Only the users who subscribe to Snapchat+ can avail of the feature, the company has said. Android users are now furious with the move and calling it an act of injustice.

Snapchat Keeps Dark Mode Behind Paywall for Android Devices

The rumors of Dark Mode being kept behind a paywall for Android users first surfaced in April this year. In June, Snapchat officially added the feature for Snapchat+ users. “Dark Mode for Android is only available to Snapchat+ subscribers at this time,” says the official website.

Android users will now have to pay $3.99 per month to subscribe to Snapchat+ to enjoy the feature. Meanwhile, iOS users can continue to switch to Dark Made without having to worry about any subscription fee.

How to Enable Snapchat Dark Mode on Android

To switch to Snapchat Dark Mode on your Android device, use the following steps:

  1. Open the Snapchat app and go to your Profile.
  2. Select the Snapchat+ icon at the top.
  3. Start your subscription by paying a $3.99 fee. You also get a seven-day free trial.
  4. After you have subscribed to Snapchat+, again go to your Profile and select Settings.
  5. Tap on App Appearance.
  6. Go to Dark Mode and switch the toggle button to the right to enable it.

While the feature is only available for paid users as of now, it could be made open for everyone in the coming future, just like My AI. The chatbot was initially rolled out only to Snapchat+ users at the beginning of the year, however, in April, it was made free for everyone.

Snapchat Users Disappointed with Paid Dark Mode

A number of Android users have expressed their anger and disappointment over having to pay for Dark Mode on Snapchat. A user wrote, “Apple users have had @Snapchat Dark Mode for some time, but now if I want it as an Android user I have to pay $30 a year for Snapchat Plus? This is an accessibility issue @snapchatsupport, PLEASE do better.”

Another tweeted, “@Snapchat is Androist!! Forcing Android users to subscribe to dark mode is theft. I don’t want ANOTHER monthly subscription, nor do I want to switch to iPhone just for this feature that is included for free in every other application. This is so disgraceful”

“Time for rant Is @snapchat f—ing serious First we can’t disable snap Ai at all which is already a big nogo. And second of all, why tf is dark mode a snapchat+ feature. Dark mode is something extremely basic and should be a core part of every app and site for accessbillity!!” wrote another frustrated user.
