Did You Know That A Woman Started Father’s Day? More Details To Know

Dad’s are difficult to buy for especially as they claim that they don’t need anything and that buying them anything nice was wasting money that you could have saved. But there is a day in each year when you can make the first man in your life feel loved and cared for that is Father’s Day.

Nowadays, it seems like there is a day for everything. But father’s day has been around for some time. Here is all you need to know about the day and how you can make your pop feel your appreciation for him.

How Did Father’s Day Start?

Did you know that Father’s Day was created by a woman? The story goes that a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd “tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents”. This was all the way back in 1909.

She went around stores to try and get support for the cause. In 1910, the state of Washington celebrated the first-ever Father’s Day!

The event led President Woodrow Wilson and President Calvin Coolidge to encourage all Americans to celebrate the day but it was not an official holiday. The enthusiasm for the day also withered with time. During the 20s and 30s people tried to get rid of both mother’s and Father’s Day and tried to replace that with just one parent’s day.

Then the Great Depression happened and retailers tried to commercialize the holiday so they could make money off of it during the financial crunch. As World War II started, Father’s Day also became a sign of respect for the troops on the battlefield.

Decades later on May 1, 1972, President Nixon signed Proclamation 4127, which declared Father’s Day a national holiday. In the document, he wrote, “Let each American make this Father’s Day an occasion for the renewal of the love and gratitude we bear to our fathers, increasing and enduring through all the years.”

The first official Father’s Day was celebrated on June 18, 1972.

What Day Is Father’s Day?

The date was originally June 19th, 1910, which was also the birthday of Sonora Smart Dodd’s father and American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. But as a national holiday, it falls on the third Sunday in June.

How To Celebrate Father’s Day?

There is no right or wrong way to celebrate a day for your father. But as most of our fathers have some similar traits, there are certain ‘safe’ options that you could go for.

  • Quality time

One of the best things that you can do for your parents especially when you are a busy grownup is to spend time with them. You could do this by taking them out to dinner, gifting them a getaway trip with you, or something similar.

  • Buy them presents

You can never go wrong with a nice present. Buying something for them that they love but would never buy will give you immense pleasure. So, it might be time to make your dad cry happy tears this Father’s Day.

  • Financial ease

If you are in a good place financially, you could take help ease your father’s financial burden. Kids try to pay their father’s medical bills or loans so they can enjoy the rest of their life without having to worry about money. Although not all children are in a position to do this, it is a great gesture.

The gist of the day is to spend some time with your father and make them feel loved and appreciated. Everyone has different love languages and that is what makes your gift or gesture unique.
