Are Post Offices Open on Good Friday?

With Good Friday almost around the corner, many post office patrons are curious to know if they can send or receive mail that day or not.

Both Good Friday and Easter mark two of the most important events in the history of Christianity. While Good Friday was the day when Jesus Christ was crucified for the sins committed by human beings, he came back to life two days after Good Friday. The former is celebrated to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and the latter is a joyous festivity that marks his Resurrection and is evidence that kindness always wins over hatred and sins.

Easter dates may fluctuate widely each year, and 2022’s date of this event is considered late. The earliest dates that Good Friday and Easter can happen are the 20th and 22nd of March. However, it wouldn’t happen again until 2285. The latest Easter may take place is April 25, something that has never taken place since 1943.

This time Good Friday falls on April 15th, and Easter on April 17th, making so many people question whether post offices will remain open on this day?

Are Post Offices Open on Good Friday?

Regardless of people celebrating Good Friday as a national holiday, the United States Post Office doesn’t recognize it as a federal holiday. Because of the lack of status of Good Friday as a holiday, the post offices shall remain open and operating.

It is, however, important to mention that the opening and closing times of the post offices all over the country may vary by their location. We advise you to check each location individually with their designated post offices.

Good Friday and Easter are Not Federal Holidays

Neither Good Friday nor Easter is a federal holiday. Easter falling on Sunday still means that many government offices and departments may be closed anyway. But Good Friday is not recognized as a state holiday in 12 states – Texas, New Jersey, Connecticut, Hawaii, Delaware, Indiana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Kentucky, Louisiana, Florida, and Tennessee.

The U.S. Postal Services does not recognize this day as a holiday. It means you may send your posts on this day as the post offices will operate their services at regular hours.

When is the Next Federal Holiday?

The next federal holiday where you may expect the post offices and mail services to be closed is on Memorial Day. Memorial Day falls on the 30th of May.

Here is the list of other federal holidays where the post offices will be closed and not operate their services.

Juneteenth National Independence Day – June 20th

Independence Day – July 4th

Labor Day – September 5th

Columbus Day – October 10th

Veterans Day – November 11th

Thanksgiving Day – November 24th

Christmas Day – December 25th

As Good Friday is recognized in several parts of the world, many people celebrate it following their own unique traditions. For instance, people in Bermuda fly kites on Good Friday. Similarly, eggs are marked with a holy cross in Ireland. How are you going to observe this day? Tell us in the comments below.
