Selena Gomez has opened up about the body-shaming comments she receives online, revealing that she does get affected by the mean things said to her. The 30 year old singer stated that she lied in the past when she said she was not affected by body shamers.
Gomez made the revelation in the latest episode of her Apple TV+ documentary My Mind & Me, which was released on Thursday. Read on to know what else the pop star had to say about the online trolls.
Selena Gomez Says She ‘Lied’ About Not Being Affected by Body-Shaming
Talking about the issue in the documentary, Gomez revealed that she would ‘cry her eyes out’ after reading the negative comments about her body on social media. “People just ran with it. It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus,” the Rare singer said.
“I lied, I would go online, and I would post a picture of myself, and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter, I’m not accepting what you’re saying.’ All the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things,” she disclosed. Gomez also explained that she lied because she did not want to bother people going through the same issues.
“I was posting these things, saying it doesn’t bother me because I didn’t want it to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing, getting shamed for what they look like, who they are, who they love. I just think it’s so unfair. I don’t think that anybody deserves to feel less than,” elaborated the singer.
The Pop Star has Hit Back at Trolls Multiple Times in the Past
Gomez, who was diagnosed with Lupus in 2014, has called out her trollers on several occasions. In January this year, she appeared at the 2023 Golden Globes wearing a strapless Valentino gown. After the event, she went live on Instagram and said, “I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays. But we don’t care.”
Earlier in April 2022, the former Disney Channel star posted a TikTok stating that she did not care about her weight. “So I be trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack in the Box, and I got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich. But honestly, I don’t care about my weight because people bitch about it anyway,” she said in the clip.
She doubled down on her views, saying, “‘You’re too small. You’re too big. That doesn’t fit. Meh, meh, meh, meh.’ Bitch, I am perfect the way I am.” More recently, the Only Murders in the Building actor revealed that her weight fluctuates due to her lupus medication.
“When I’m taking it, I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight. I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through and no one knows the real story. I just want people to know that you’re beautiful,” she said in a TikTok last month.
