Facebook’s Future CTO Teases New VR Prototype Headset

It seems like Facebook is geared up to bring some new innovation as Facebook’s current virtual reality lead as well as soon-to-be CTO (chief technology officer) Andrew Bosworth (or “Boz”) is playing around with VR Prototype technology.

Andrew Bosworth, on Wednesday, had teased a slim VR headset prototype. What has to be noted is that the future CTO of Facebook shared this on social media just a day before HTC is gearing to reveal a new VR product.

Bosworth took to his Twitter handle and shared a picture wherein we can see him wearing the VR prototype headset. He also mentioned the concepts of Facebook’s work on the metaverse in his tweet.

Facebook’s Future CTO and Mark Zuckerberg Teases New VR Prototype Headsets

Facebook’s Reality Labs researchers team which is being led by former Valve researcher Michael Abrash is working in Redmond, Washington on the VR concept hardware.

He wrote, “Proud of the research Michael Abrash’s team is working on at FRL-R Redmond—excited to get an early look at some of the technologies that will underpin the metaverse (we work on several prototype headsets to prove out concepts, this is one of them. Kind of. It’s a long story.)”

HTC’s China President Alvin Wang Graylin responded to his tweet by writing, “Hey Boz, Nice looking research project. Want to trade for a production quality device hot out of our factory?”

Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg also teased a similar prototype VR (or AR) tech product by sharing his picture wearing a VR prototype headset.

Sharing the picture, he wrote, “I spent the day with the Facebook Reality Labs research team in Redmond to demo our next-generation virtual reality, augmented reality and artifical intelligence tech. This one is an early retina resolution prototype. The future is going to be awesome.”

Well, one thing to be noted is that these VR prototype products that have been teased by Facebook executives are not expected to be the actual retail products. However, it is still interesting to know what is actually happening in Facebook’s virtual reality lab via a glimpse of these pictures.

The headset worn by Zuckerberg is similar to Facebook’s Oculus headsets. But, he refers to it as an early retina resolution prototype.

On the other hand, the headset worn by Boz looks to carry a more intriguing design. It seems to be similar to that of Apple’s rumored VR headset.

Well, apart from the “retina” comments made by Zuckerberg in his post regarding the VR prototype headset, no other details have been revealed about the products.

We need to wait and watch if Facebook is actually looking forward to launching these products or if these are simply nonfunctional design mock-ups.

Stay tuned for updates on the same!
