PSG Confirms Lionel Messi Testing Positive for Covid-19

Lionel Messi’s name has been added to the list of superstars who have recently tested positive for Covid-19.

New year celebrations will have to be cut short this time around as Covid 19 is ready to grip the world once again. We have seen a surge of active cases across various countries and it’s time to reconsider our negligence towards the virus.

For quite some time the number of active cases has been increasing. In all sports, matches have been canceled and several people are calling for a small pause to all activities. However, the probability of that happening is rather less.

It is rather the individuals who will be pushed to show restraint and the restrictions for players will probably be tightened. Until now clubs were considerably lenient but as things have taken a turn for the worse everyone will have to act accordingly.

Lionel Messi tests positive for Covid along with 3 teammates

If we take Lionel Messi’s case, he too attended a small New Year party in France. There was a video of the Argentinian dancing on the stage with her wife which went viral. Although it’s only human to celebrate, there was complete negligence of masks in the video.

While the purpose is not to point fingers at someone, it is necessary to realize where we are going wrong collectively and try to improve the situation. According to PSG’s official statement, 3 other players have tested positive for Covid 19.

Sergio Rico, Juan Bernat, and 19-year-old Nathan Bitumazala have all tested positive. All 4 of them are following protocol and have been in regular touch with the medical team. PSG also reported one staff member who has tested positive.

As a result, all 4 players will be unavailable for the team’s trip against Vannes in the French Cup.

Till when can we expect Leo to be out of the squad?

As of now, there is no set date as to when he will make his return. The general pattern is that the players go in isolation for 7 days. They also undergo 2-3 tests in this period.

If they are asymptomatic and test negative within that period then they are cleared for play. However, it is upon the club’s discretion as to when they want to recall their player because Messi’s health is rather critical for PSG’s season.

Right now Kylian Mbappe will have to take the lead as both Messi and Neymar are unavailable. Neymar will be out for around 3 more weeks but we can expect Messi to return on or after PSG’s match with Lyon on the 10th of January.

The other 3 do not have a key role in the squad and their absence will not worry Mauricio Pochetino that much.  As of now, PSG has a comfortable 13 point cushion in the Ligue 1. So the key focus will be in the match against Vannes.

PSG are still favorites against Vannes but you never know there can be an upset on the cards. Post that PSG shouldn’t be in a hurry to get Messi back. However, this rise in the number of positive cases is an alarming situation.

Both in the sporting world and our day-to-day lives, individuals, as well as organizations, will have to take the responsibility to be more careful and tackle this situation head-on.
