Barcelona got knocked out of the Copa del Rey in Round of 16 against Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames stadium and, Ansu Fati got injured. The Los Leones managed to win this thrilling contest 3-2 after extra time.
Barcelona is the most successful team in the competition but, they could not get past the Round of 16 this time. They could have faced Real Madrid in the quarter-finals however, they could not beat this persistent Bilbao side.
How did Ansu Fati get injured?
Aside from getting out of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona received another major blow as Ansu Fati got injured and got off the pitch crying.
The 19-year old started on the bench as he recovered from his injury recently. He got subbed in at the 61st minute when Barca needed a goal. But the Spaniard had to be taken off in the extra time as he got injured while chasing after the ball.
Barcelona has confirmed that he has a femoral biceps injury in his left thigh. However, the full extent of his injury is still unknown so, the medical team will perform some tests.
Fati scored a goal in the Super Cup against Real Madrid and, the fans were excited with his return. But unfortunately, the Spaniard will have to miss more games as he previously had an injury to his femoral biceps.
Pedri also had some issue with his leg muscle in the extra time so, he gave a signal to take him off.
Barcelona got knocked out of the Copa del Rey
The defending champions of the competition conceded in the first 2 minutes with a fabulous goal from Munian. They managed to give a reply as Torres scored a brilliant curling goal from outside the box.
Athletic Bilbao dominated the first half as they had 10 shots while Barca had just one. Ter Stegen made some fine saves against Nico Williams and Raul Garcia to keep his team in-game.
However, Athletic Bilbao took the lead again in the 86th minute after a set-piece. But, Barcelona again equalized in the dying minutes of the second half via Pedri and took the game in extra time.
The Los Leones will be frustrated that the game went on to extra time as they were the better team. But Barcelona managed to equalize twice with their only two shots on target.
The hosts got a penalty in the extra time as Jordi Alba handled the ball in the box. Munian stepped up and gave his side lead by sending Ter Stegen the wrong way. He was the key player for Bilbao as he scored a brace and completed most number dribbles in the match (3).
What’s next for Ansu Fati?
Barcelona’s entrusted number 10 after Lionel Messi is having a hard time with injuries. The 19-year old looks to be overplayed in some situations which has led to his fall. This is what Xavi had to say on Fati and Pedri’s injuries:

The Cules will hope that he recovers soon as they need him. They are currently at the 6th spot in the La Liga table so, they will need a fully fit squad to get a place in the top 4.
