Around seventy-five years ago the Liberal World Order emerged from the aftermath of WWII. The term, liberal world order, which expects a country to be democratic and remain open to the rest of the world, has been used once again by President Joe Biden’s adviser Brian Deese.
Brian Deese is facing backlash after answering a question on the fairness of high gas prices by highlighting the importance of the “liberal world order,” and a video clip of the moment has since gone viral. So what exactly is a “Liberal World Order”? Read on to understand the meaning.
What Is A Liberal World Order?
Liberal World Order emerged in the aftermath of World War II. Theoretically, it can be referred to as the liberal system that operates on rules that are applied to each country equally, encouraging them to be democratic and open their economy to the rest of the world.
Still confused? Well, take the examples of the United Nations, The World Bank and The International Monetary Fund. Suc institutions stand on the premise of the Liberal World Order. Speaking of a “Liberal World Order”, the concept was mainly championed by the United States, which served as the pinnacle of democratic power and economic success.
However, the “Liberal World Order” has been challenged by the illiberal Soviet Union during the Cold War. Since the late 2000s, the term has become weaker due to several reasons like territorial disputes, the very recent Covid-19 pandemic, increasing destabilisation from other countries, like China and global democratic backsliding. So what happens in the absence of a Liberal World Order?
Naturally, the world will likely become less prosperous, less peaceful and less democratic. So, there are three kinds of people that would be offended by “Liberal World Order”: Fascists and Putin fans who hate pluralism & democracy, leftists with mostly valid critiques of neoliberalism, and dumb conspiracy-addled MAGAs who have no idea what “Liberal World Order” actually means. ‘Liberal World Order’ And Fairness Of High Gas Prices…
President Biden’s adviser Brian Deese is facing backlash for a recent interview with CNN that has gained more than 800,000 views on Twitter. The clip wherein Brian spoke about the fairness of high gas prices using the term “Liberal World Order” has invited debate across the globe, especially in America.
In the recent interview, Deese was speaking to CNN’s Victor Blackwell on Thursday and reflected on comments Joe Biden made during his speech at the NATO summit in Madrid on the same day. When asked by the reporter: “How long is it fair to expect American drivers and drivers around the world to pay that premium for this war?”
The president replied: “As long as it takes,” insisting that Russia could not be allowed to win the conflict against Ukraine and then potentially menace other nations.” When asked a similar question, Deese spoke about American families holding firm.
Victor asked: “What do you say to the families that say ‘we can’t afford to pay $4.85 a gallon for months, if not years, this is not sustainable.” Deese replied: “What you heard from the president today was a clear articulation of the stakes. This is about the future of the liberal world order and we have to stand firm.
Brian Deese added, “But at the same time, what I would say to that family and Americans across the country is you have a president and an administration that is going to do everything in its power to blunt those price increases and bring those prices down.”
So why did Deese use the term Liberal World Order? If you’ve watched the full interview, you’d know that Brian used the term to relate to a large group of countries that aims to prevent Vladimir Putin from extending his influence across the world by means including military aggression. Now, one set of people, that might get offended are the Trump worshipers, just saying.
A Similar Backlash Related to “The New World Order”
The Biden administration faced a similar backlash when Biden previously used the term “new world order” in a speech, sparking conspiracy theories. While the phrase “new world order” is generally used to denote a “significant geopolitical change, it can also designate a conspiracy theory that stipulates a secretive globalist authority is seeking to control the world under a totalitarian regime” and “strip sovereign countries and its citizens of their freedom”.
While the concepts have invited lengths of academic papers, Deese’s recent comments are both ridiculed and supported, with many people trying to bring forward the meaning of the term “Liberal World Order”.

“The Biden administration cares more about the liberal world order than American families,” Former White House Director of Strategic Communications Mercedes Schlapp tweeted. “Is Brian Dese a Republican plant? Because this is the easiest midterm ad content I’ve ever seen,” Republican communicator Matt Whitlock tweeted.
Matt also tweeted later: “Great poll question: Are you comfortable paying record-high gas prices to protect the ‘liberal world order. I’d be willing to bet less than 20% say yes.” The ‘Liberal World Order’ we need to wake up and realize what we really are up against. Biden is nothing more than a puppet for the radical left,” Fox News contributor Sara A. Carter tweeted.

However, some social media users trying to shed light on the terms “Liberal World Order”. “The liberal world order established after World War 2 simply means countries follow a rules-based international order and don’t get to invade neighbouring countries, breaking international law or committing war crimes. A strange thing to be against, imho,” Morten Øverbye, the founder of Automagi, tweeted.

We've been living in a liberal world order since the end of WWII. Liberalism doesn't mean the American Left. Do you think a Liberal Arts College is about communist indoctrination?
Oh wait, of course you do… sigh.
