Umer Sharif, veteran Pakistani comedian, director, and actor passed away today i.e. on 2nd October in Germany. He was 66. He was on his way to the US for medical treatment after a prolonged illness.
Dr. Mohammed Faisal, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany has confirmed the news. He took to his Twitter handle to pay tribute to the legendary comedian.

Veteran Comedian Umer Sharif Passes Away in Germany
After the news of the comedy king passing away broke, condolence messages started pouring in on various social media platforms like FB and Twitter from fellow colleagues from Pakistan as well as from India.
Renowned comedian-actor from India Kapil Sharma paid tribute to the star by tweeting, “Alvida legend. May your soul Rest In Peace.”

In the month of September Sharif was admitted at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in the city of Karachi when his health condition deteriorated after falling sick.
He also released a video appealing to Prime Minister Imran Khan for financial support for his medical treatment. The Sindh government took cognizance of the situation and released 44 million Pakistani rupees towards the arrangement of air ambulance and other financial assistance for his urgent treatment in the USA.
The Air Ambulance started from Karachi International Airport on 2-Oct morning to the United States for his treatment. Zareen Ghazal, wife of Umer Sharif was accompanying him on the flight to get him treated by renowned cardiologist Dr. Tariq Shahab in Washington DC.
As per the itinerary, the flight was to halt in Germany for refueling where his health was getting worse. He was then admitted to Germany’s Nuremberg hospital on Wednesday.
Sharif also referred to as the King of Comedy had undergone bypass surgery in 2020. There was pressure mounted on the government to assist him financially by many celebrities when videos and pictures shared by Sharif last month went viral on social media.
Well-known Pakistani author Nadeem Farooq Paracha also remembered the late comedian and offered his condolences by taking to his Twitter handle.
He wrote, “One of the sharpest wits in Pakistan Umer Sharif, is no more. He rose from a humble background in Karachi to become a giant in his field. His punchy, ‘awami’ [popular] style of comedy influenced numerous comedians, not only in Pakistan but also in India. May his soul rest in peace.”

Sharif, who began his career when he was a teenager as a stand-up comedian has gained immense popularity in the 1980s and ’90s in India and Pakistan. He also came to India to participate in different shows and award functions. He worked in approximately 60 plus stage comedies and acted in two big movies as well.
