UK Prime Minister Liz Truss Resigns After 45-Days In Office Amid An Open Revolt From Her Party

First, the UK lost its queen, now its Prime Minister has given up despite being just started.  Liz Truss, who was elected as U.K.’s prime minister, winning from the Conservative party with 81,326 votes against 60,399 for Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, has shockingly resigned after serving only 45 days in office. Her resignation comes just a day after she had vowed to stay in power, saying she was “a fighter and not a quitter.”

The Reason Behind Liz Truss’s Resignation…

A few days back, Liz Truss vowed to stay in power, stating she was a “fighter and not a quitter”. However, in a shocking move, the U.K.’s prime minister from Conservative Party resigned today (Oct. 20) after serving only 45 days in office, making a prime minister with the shortest term in U.K.’s history.

During her resignation, Liz stated: “I recognise… given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.” If you’re following the UK’s current politics, you’d know that Liz was facing an open revolt against her leadership. It has come out that several Conservative Party MPs called for her resignation amid mounting chaos at the heart of the UK government following the queen’s death.

Not only this but she was also forced to abandon her existing policy programme after it “triggered a bond market rout and a collapse of her approval ratings and those of her Conservative Party”. Following her resignation, Truss announced that a leadership election will take place, which will be wrapped up within the next week.

Possible Candidates For The Post…

As Liz Truss’s chaotic premiership comes to an end despite having just started, potential candidates are already in line for taking over the political reins. The very first and obvious candidate to replace Truss is former Chancellor of Exchequer Rishi Sunak, a runner-up in the recent Prime Ministerial run.

Other potential contenders include Penny Mordaunt, Grant Shapps and Kemi Badenoch. It has been reported that former home secretary Suella Braverman may also be bidding for the post. Well, the next week will tell who is going to take over the reins, until then, Liz will continue to serve as the Prime Minister per her announcement.

During her resignation, she explained that she met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady and agreed that a leadership election will be wrapped up within the next week. The step has been taken to ensure that the country does not deviate from its path to fulfil its “fiscal plans and maintain economic stability and national security”.

Liz, who graduated from Merton College Oxford, also served as the president of Oxford University Liberal Democrats. The highly-qualified politician who joined the Conservative Party in 1996, was elected as the MP for South West Norfolk at the 2010 general election.

She has previously held various Cabinet offices under former prime ministers Theresa May, Boris Johnson and David Cameron. In 2021, she was elected as the foreign secretary under Boris Johnson. Along with her resignation as the prime mister, she has also resigned as the leader of the conservative party. Well, seems like someone’s political career has come to an end.
