Titanic OceanGate Submarine Carrying 5 People Goes Missing in Atlantic Ocean

Titanic OceanGate Submarine has gone missing! At the moment, a search and rescue operation is underway in the mid Atlantic. As per various reports, a tourist submarine that was carrying 5 people went missing during a dive to Titanic’s wreck on Sunday.

According to a report by BBC, the contact with the small submarine got lost about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive. Read on to gather more information about the missing submarine.

Titanic tourist submersible goes missing

Titanic OceanGate submarine has gone missing. Tour firm OceanGate has stated that all the options were being explored to save the five people onboard. The ticket for the eight-day trip costs around $250,000 (£195,000) including dives to the wreck at a depth of 3,800m (12,500ft).

The officials are getting help from government agencies, the US and Canadian navies, and commercial deep-sea firms for the rescue operation. The missing craft which is believed to be OceanGate’s Titan submersible has reportedly 5 people onboard.

While having a chat with CBS News, Lieutenant Jordan Hart of the US Coast Guard in Boston said there is a “search and rescue operation” underway off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

On Monday afternoon, Rear Adm John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said, “We anticipate there is somewhere between 70 and the full 96 hours available at this point.” He also mentioned that a submarine, 2 aircraft, and sonar buoys were involved in the search for the vessel.

Rear Adm Mauger went on to say that the area where the search is taking place was “remote”, making operations difficult. He also stated that the rescue teams were “taking this personally” and they were leaving no stone unturned to bring those onboard home safely.

British adventurer Hamish Harding is among 5 onboard the missing Titanic submersible

Hamish Harding, a 58-year-old British billionaire and explorer is among those on the missing submarine. Over the weekend, he took to social media to announce that he would be aboard the mission to the wreck of the Titanic.

The business tycoon also added that because of the “worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023”. Later on, he wrote, “A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”

What did OceanGate Expeditions have to say about the missing submarine?

OceanGate Expeditions said its “entire focus [was] on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families”. It further added, “We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to re-establish contact with the submersible.”

The company behind the eight-day trip on its carbon-fibre submersible sees it as a “chance to step outside of everyday life and discover something truly extraordinary.” As per the official website of the company, one expedition is going on right now and two more have been planned for June 2024.
