Aaron Sorkin suffered a stroke in November 2022

A couple of months ago, Aaron Sorkin had a medical emergency. In his latest interview with New York Times published on Wednesday, the West Wing creator talked about his medical emergency. He suffered a stroke in November 2022.

While having a chat with the publication, the writer mentioned that at that time he woke up in the middle of the night and realized that he was “crashing into walls and corners” while walking to the kitchen. He didn’t pay much attention to it till the next morning when he couldn’t hold a glass of orange juice without spilling it.
Soon after, the writer called his doctor who told him to come in immediately. At that point in time, the doctor told the playwright that his blood pressure was so high that he was “supposed to be dead.” Then, he learned that he suffered a stroke.

The Molly’s Game writer told the New York Times, “Mostly it was a loud wake-up call. I thought I was one of those people who could eat whatever he wanted, smoke as much as he wanted, and it’s not going to affect me. Boy, was I wrong.”

The media outlet New York Times even reported that the film director didn’t want to talk about his medical emergency on the record at first as the interview was supposed to be  about the opening of his Broadway musical, an adaptation of “Camelot,” but he changed his mind as he wanted to create awareness about his story.

Aaron Sorkin had been a heavy smoker since high school

For those of you who are unaware, let us share with you, Aaron had been a heavy smoker since high school. It has been reported by the media outlet, that back in the day, he used to smoke two packs of Merits a day. In the same interview, he also stated that it has been a big part of his writing process over the years.

Sorkin said, “It was just part of it, the way a pen was part of it. I don’t want to talk about it too much, because I’ll start to salivate.” He disclosed that after the stroke he quit his longstanding smoking habit for his own good. In addition to this, he also made a few lifestyle changes. Now, he works out 2 times a day and eats healthier food.

Aaron admitted, “I take a lot of medicine. You can hear the pills rattling around in me.” On the other hand, when we shed some light on his recovery process, he struggled with typing and couldn’t even sign his name. Along with this, he was also warned about flying for a couple of weeks. He confessed that he was able to overcome all those problems, however, he still cannot taste food very well.

The New York Times reported, “For about a month afterward, [Sorkin] was slurring words. He had trouble typing; he was discouraged from flying for a few weeks; and until recently, he couldn’t sign his name (he has just discovered, thanks to ‘Camelot’ autograph seekers, that that’s improving). Those issues are now behind him, and the main lingering effect is that he still can’t really taste food.”

Although, in the aftermath of the stroke, things were a bit scary for the famous screenwriter. He told the publication, “There was a minute when I was concerned that I was never going to be able to write again and I was concerned in the short-term that I wasn’t going to be able to continue writing ‘Camelot.’”

Lately, the To Kill A Mockingbird adapter has been flying back and forth between New York and Los Angeles and working on perfecting the Broadway musical ‘Camelot.’ He further added, “Let me make this very, very clear. I’m fine. I wouldn’t want anyone to think I can’t work. I’m fine.”

As per a report by Deadline, the opening night for Camelot has been set for April 13. It stars actors Dakin Matthews as Merlyn/Pellinore and Fergie Philippe as Sir Sagramore. He went on to say, “If it’ll get one person to stop smoking, then it’ll be helpful.” A spokesperson for Camelot has stated that Aaron will make no further comment on his stroke.
