Legendary actor James Caan, who was known for his role in The Godfather has passed away. The actor breathed his last on Wednesday evening. He was 82 years old.
The cause of death is yet unknown. A statement was issued on Caan’s Twitter handle to announce the heartbreaking news.
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.
The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

James Caan is Survived by Five Children
The statement on his Twitter handle reads, “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
The statement ended, with ‘End of tweet’, which was the actor’s usual way of signing off tweets. James, who was married four times throughout his life, is survived by five children.
Tributes Pour in from the Industry
James’ industry colleagues are paying tributes to the deceased actor and condolences to the family. Rob Reiner, who directed James in the film Misery tweeted, “So sorry to hear the news. I loved working with him. And the only Jew I knew who could calf rope with the best of them. Love to the family.”
Director James Gunn posted some posters of the actor’s films and wrote, “Rest In Peace James Caan. There are so many movies of his I love, The Godfather films of course being at the very top, but here are a few more I adore.”
James Had a Seven Decade Long Career
James was born and brought up in New York City. He was at Hofstra University when he started taking interest in acting. He was then accepted at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre where he studied acting for five years.
James then started acting in plays and went on to do Television shows in the 1960s. He got his first film role in 1963 with the film Irma la Douce. He had an uncredited role as a sailor in the film. The actor got his first starring role in the 1965 film Red Line 7000.
In the early 1970s, he returned to television with the show Brian’s Song. He received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Brian Piccolo, a dying football player.
Soon after that, James shot to fame with the role of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. The role got him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The actor then reprised his role in The Godfather Part II.
While celebrating 50 years of The Godfather in March 2022, the actor had told NYPost,”One of the things that made ‘The Godfather’ successful, besides brilliant directing and writing and wonderful actors … was that everyone really enjoyed making it, and that comes off on the screen and I think the audience can tell that we were having a good time doing what we were doing up there.”
After The Godfather, he went on to star in films like Misery, Elf, The Gambler and Thief.
