Susan Roces “Queen of Philippines Movies” Dies at 80

When the celebrated Actor and Comedian Bob Saget died back in January, a huge outpouring of grief occurred. The Facebook updates, tweets and other postings captured some of the shared feelings amongst social media users that knew him.

Similarly, Philippines film icon, Susan Roces who was known as the “Queen of Philippines Movies” died at the age of 80. 

The internet has not seemed to take this news well as the legendary actor whose career spanned over 70 years giving such a curve to the Philippines cinema has left a huge void in the hearts of fans and cinephiles.

The remarkable actress who would have turned 81 this July has died on Friday evening as her daughter has confirmed to the world. Let’s take a look.

Veteran Actress Susan Roces died at the age of 80

Roces was married to the late Philippine King of Movies Fernando Poe Jr. she was known early in her career for various movies where she starred alongside her husband. She is popular among younger generations as she portrays the grandmother of Cardo Dalisay in the TV adaptation of Ang Probinsyano. 

Susan Roces was one of the finest actresses from the Philippines who won numerous awards for her brilliant acting in end number of movies. The famous Queen of the Philippines movies passed away on Friday evening as confirmed by her daughter. 

Her daughter Grace Poe confirmed in a family statement that has been circulated to various news channels including CBN News who were the first to break the demise announcement. 

The statement read “With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jesusa Sonora Poe, whom many of you know as Susan Roces”. 

She added that the Veteran actress passed away peacefully on Friday evening, May 20th. The statement also included that the actress was surrounded by her loved ones including her daughter Grace, her nephews Joseph and Jeffrey and many of her family and close friends.

The statement read that Susan Roces lived a happy and peaceful life. The demise announcement requested fans and well-wishers to remember her for the beauty she was. 

The statement also said, “She is now with the Lord and her beloved Ronnie — FPJ. We will miss her sorely but we celebrate a life well-lived. Susan Roces — daughter, mother, grandmother, a true Filipina and a national treasure.”

Susan Roces, who starred in more than 100 films and dozens of television shows over a career that spanned more than five decades rose to her fame in the 50s and quickly became a household name. She was the first Philippines woman to become the lady of local cinema. 

She has won numerous awards in her career, including the Gawad Urian Best Actress Award and FAMAS Lifetime Achievement Award She has also been facilitated by the Venice Film Festival for her role in Felo De Se as Best Actress.
